- Several years ago, I was part of a small team of faculty at Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts. They wanted to design and launch a new course, something that had never been tried before. To create the course, we structured every day as an experiment. In the morning, we'd design a course component and in the afternoon, we'd test it with students. At the end of the day, we plan modifications to try the next day, based on what was learned. Some ideas didn't work. We had an activity that completely confused the students. And while this was a little discouraging, it was okay because we'd only spent a day working on it. Plus, we were able to take action quickly and try something new based on what we had just learned. After a few days of this approach, we could really see our progress.
