- As we build a server to host services, it's common to want to use those services, not just on the local network, but across the internet as well. Before we expose a server to the internet though, there's some things we need to think about. The internet is a hostile place. And these days, it doesn't take long for malicious actors to find an unsecured server and exploit it. So in exposing a server to the internet, we need to consider the architecture of what will be exposed and how, alongside how exposed services will be secured. Usually, when a server provide services that are available on the internet, the internet connection isn't directly plugged into the server. The service runs on a local port on the server, and we configure an external port on the network's router or firewall, to send or forward traffic to a specific port on the server.
