- [Instructor] When we're running a server, it's important to know how the systems resources are being used and whether there's sufficient. Resources in this case refer to things like processor power, memory, storage space and so on, things that are finite and which if they're insufficient can cause performance or experience problems for ourselves or our users. An important first step in monitoring resources at a high level is to use a program like top or htop to see a dashboard view of the current state of resources. I'll open htop here and let's take a brief look at it. Here at the top of the screen, there's some little meters showing CPU activity broken down by processor core. There's not a lot going on in the system right now, but if there were, I'd see the effort that the processors are handling here with different color pipe characters representing different kinds of work the CPU is doing.
