- [Instructor] On Ubuntu server, the default firewall is called UFW, short for uncomplicated firewall. UFW acts as a front end for the netfilter packet filtering software. UFW is more approachable for beginners than the iptables software that has been used historically to interact with netfilter. A firewall determines what network activity is allowed to reach software on the server, and what network activity is allowed to exit the server to the network. When administering a standalone server, most of what we'll use the firewall for is to allow network peers access to specific ports on the server. Services on the server run on specific ports. And if the firewall blocks access to them from the network, other clients can't access them. Right now, with the default configuration of Ubuntu server, the firewall isn't running.
