Exploring text and binary logs

- [Instructor] Logs provide a treasure trove of useful information for troubleshooting and just for learning about how the system works. On an Ubuntu server, there are two kinds of logs we should be aware of. The system keeps text logs in the /var/log directory, and the systemd system management framework uses journald to write logs, in a binary format, into the journal. The text logs, controlled by rsyslog, have a long heritage on Linux systems, and many people prefer them to the newer systemd journal for a variety of reasons, including historical familiarity and the ability to read them programmatically using text-based tools. However, these text logs can become unwieldy or difficult to work with when they become very long.
