- A problem with basic scatter plots is that you need to examine all the data points and then infer what you think the relevant relationship of the two variables might be. Not everybody thinks the same. In this lesson, I'm going to show you how scatter plots are often combined with lines of best fit, which attempt to summarize bivariate data relationships. Here's an example of a basic line of best fit combined with a scatter plot. This scatter plot plots car data on weight and mileage. Each data marker represents a different car type. The scatter plot is relatively straightforward to interpret. Cars with higher weight have lower mileage, and vice versa. However, you're helped in this interpretation by the line of best fit.
