Line plots
- Visualizing a trend in a scatterplot doesn't have to be complicated. Lines of best fit, use various statistical methods to summarize data relationships. But there is another way to visualize trends in a relationship plot that doesn't involve any complexity. In this lesson, I'll walk you through line plots which visualize a trend by simply connecting consecutive data markers. In other words, line plots connect each scatter plot marker to the next marker. Here's an example of a line plot. Here is a graph of US life expectancy over the last 100 years. This dataset consists of 100 observations. There is one life expectancy observation per year, and each marker on the graph is connected via a direct line. You can clearly see that life expectancy has made significant improvements in the last century, but you can also observe a significant dip around the time of the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918.
