课程: AI in Fintech Essential Training

What is Fintech?

- [Instructor] Financial technology, more commonly called fintech, is one of the hottest areas in the finance and technology space right now. Now, the term fintech doesn't have a precise definition, but in general it refers to a variety of areas that are emerging and growing very rapidly. These include things like blockchain, automated investment advisory services, more commonly called robo-advising, online lending, AI, crowdfunding, and a number of other areas. All of these areas have the potential to disrupt traditional finance, and for that reason, there's a lot of focus and a lot of interest in this space. Now, fintech is having a tremendous impact on many areas of the financial landscape. In particular, we think about things like investment advisory services or the trading of stocks and post-trade settlement activities, Fintech has changed in the landscape there. When we think about blockchain, it has the potential to make trade settlements much faster and cheaper. Online marketplace lending is changing the way people borrow money and the way they start businesses. Now, the issue with a lot of this is that our regulatory environment is built for the old system. The SEC rules were built around the system that developed over the last century. That's true both in the U.S. and abroad, and so different regulators around the world are taking a different approach to these new and emerging fintech issues. I don't know what the regulations are going to look like in many of these fintech areas a decade from now, nobody does, and that's what's so interesting, but also so challenging about working in the fintech space. For you as a working professional, whether you are thinking about yourself as a technologist or whether you are working in a more traditional management capacity, you need to be aware of the emerging fintech space and the impacts that it's going to have on businesses, large and small in the industry.
