It's name comes from a shortened version of Gojira, And that's because originally when it was first developed around 2002, its biggest competitor was Bugzilla, and Jira has come a long way since then. They still have their issue tracking software, which is Jira, but they've also included some Service Desk Jiras and Confluence, which is a way to organize your work in HipChat and Bitbucket and a bunch of other stuff.
