- Now that you have your object picked out, let's set up our scanning environment. There are a few key things to consider. First, photogrammetry works best in a noisy environment. Objects in the background actually help the software compute an accurate mesh. Clean white rooms or green screens are counterproductive. Pick a scanning environment that has points of reference in the background. You can also add this noise yourself. If you're scanning an object on a table, lay down pages of newspaper or a magazine, or use a patterned tablecloth. You can even add colored sticky notes to give the software more points of interest to compare. You'll also need the right lighting. Photogrammetry works best in bright, but diffuse light. You'll want to avoid lighting fixtures or windows in your photos. And watch out for your shadow. Pick lighting where you don't have one, or position your body so that it doesn't affect your photos.
