By ensuring accurate financial reporting, this role provides the foundation for informed decision-making by leadership, helping the organization achieve its strategic objectives. The Senior Accountant’s oversight of budgets, accounts receivable, and accounts payable ensures effective resource allocation, timely collections, and efficient payment processing—minimizing financial risks and maximizing operational efficiency. Furthermore, through mentoring junior staff and driving process improvements, the Senior Accountant helps build a sustainable and resilient finance function that can support organizational growth.
Position Summary:
The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining the integrity of financial records, and supporting compliance with internal and external standards. This role is responsible for overseeing reconciliations, general ledger maintenance, and month-end closings while temporarily managing accounts receivable during transitions. The Senior Accountant collaborates closely with team members to implement effective internal controls and mentor junior staff.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting and Reconciliation:
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Oversee the reconciliation of bank accounts, vendor balances, and general ledger accounts.
- Ensure all reconciliations are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
Budget Planning and Monitoring:
- Develop, monitor, and maintain departmental and organizational budgets.
- Collaborate with department heads to prepare budget modifications as needed.
- Analyze revenue and expenses, reallocating resources as necessary to meet financial goals.
- Prepare and present monthly budget reports to highlight proposed adjustments and identify anomalies.
Month-End and Year-End Close:
- Lead the month-end close process by preparing journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Assist with the preparation of year-end audit schedules and support external auditors as needed.
Supervision of Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable:
- Oversee the daily activities of the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable functions.
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of customer invoices, collections, vendor payments, and expense reimbursements.
- Implement best practices for AR and AP workflows, maintaining strong internal controls.
- Review aging reports and address discrepancies or outstanding items promptly.
Mentorship and Team Collaboration:
- Provide guidance and training to junior accounting staff, promoting professional growth.
- Support cross-functional projects aimed at process improvement and efficiency.
- Act as a backup for other key financial roles as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit or complex organization.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Proficiency with accounting software (preferably MIP) and Microsoft Office Suite (primarily Excel).
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively across departments.
