Office Description:

At the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), we are fueled by a workforce committed to serving as the Secretary's primary advisor on matters involving the nation's public health. OASH oversees the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' key public health offices and programs, several Presidential and Secretarial advisory committees, ten regional health offices across the nation, the Office of the Surgeon General, and the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) Commissioned Corps.

ORI’s mission is to protect the health and safety of the public, promote the integrity of U.S. Public Health Service (PHS)-supported research, and conserve public funds by ensuring the integrity of all PHS-supported biomedical and behavioral research. Over 5,000 institutions across the globe receive PHS funds (totaling over $50B) for research each year.

ORI oversees and directs PHS research integrity activities on behalf of the HHS Secretary under the PHS Policies on Research Misconduct (42 C.F.R. These activities include, but are not limited to: conducting education and outreach related to fostering research integrity and the responsible conduct of research; supporting PHS-funded research institutions as they work to foster a research environment that promotes research integrity and the responsible conduct of research, and to respond effectively to allegations of research misconduct;

working to ensure that institutions conducting PHS funded research are compliant with the Public Health Service Policies on Research Misconduct (42 CFR Part 93); oversight of research misconduct inquiries and investigations (including review of institutional activities for compliance with 42 C.F.R. Part 93); making findings of research misconduct and proposing administrative actions in connection with research conducted or supported by the PHS.

Job Description:

Reviewing and evaluating policies, regulations, or issues related to the integrity of biomedical and behavioral research, for the development of guidance, policies, procedures, compliance assessments, and/or recommendations for corrective actions.

Preparing reports and maintaining records of work accomplishments and administrative information, as required, and coordinate the preparation, presentation and communication of work-related information to the supervisor.

Promoting, supporting, and fostering the ORI education, outreach, compliance, and integrity mission to institutional leaders, officials, executives, research scientists, biomedical and behavioral researchers, PHS research awardees, other Federal agencies, state and local agencies, institutions of higher learning, and private sector institutions both nationally and internationally.
