“In my lab, we bring together data science, social science, and natural science to answer policy questions about problems that are fundamentally global in nature. This type of policy work is much less about critiquing existing policies, and more about helping people think through the policy questions of tomorrow before we get there. You’re trying to meet a moving train. That’s part of the challenge, but also what’s exciting.” Meet Solomon Hsiang, new professor of environmental social sciences. ?? It is an old and outdated belief that science or research can ever be employed in isolation from culture, values, and justice. Instead, scientists must strive to understand and improve the ways in which our work intersects with lived experience and social impacts. I'm excited to see this guidance from the White House on the use of science, data, and research in pursuit of environmental justice. The doc offers a series of high-level recommendations for identifying and addressing longstanding gaps, barriers, and missing science, data, and research relevant to environmental justice. Finished Hannah Ritchie's (currently at Our World in Data & alum of The University of Edinburgh) new book ?? "Not the End of the World: How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet" ?? and two things stuck with me (beyond, of course, the optimism that not all the stats show bad news ?? , there are stories of success out there ?? and we should not lose hope that we can be the first generation to leave the world a better place than when we got here): 1. All of the challenges directly implicate how we produce our food and what food we eat (see below) 2. We (especially academics) often get caught up in debating with people who ultimately want the same thing - the details are important but we need to all keep pulling in the same direction towards a more sustainable future Thanks for the inspiration, Hannah!

? ?? “The Trump administration regularly suppressed, downplayed, or simply ignored scientific research demonstrating the need for regulation to protect public health and the environment,” our deputy director Romany Webb Romany Webb and Climate Science Legal Defense Fund's executive director Lauren Kurtz in a journal article re: the Trump administration’s efforts to silence science: https://buff.ly/3WGEkwB ?? ?? The Environmental Data Science Book (EDS Book) project is like a big, open library that helps scientists working on environmental problems share their work using special online notebooks. These notebooks let them show how they do their experiments so anyone can understand or use the same methods. The project uses popular online tools to make sure these notebooks are easy to find and use by everyone, not just scientists. It’s all about helping tackle a huge problem, like protecting our planet. The idea is to make science open and accessible so that everyone can contribute to solving these big issues. By making it easier for scientists to work together and share their discoveries in a simple way, the EDS book is creating a community that can make a real difference in facing our world's environmental challenges. They’re inviting everyone to join in by asking questions, sharing ideas, or adding to the project. This way, it’s not just a tool for scientists, but for anyone interested in helping the environment. The goal is to make science open and collaborative so that we can all be part of solving the grand challenges together. #grandchallenge https://lnkd.in/dE_KBqEa

This paper (https://rdcu.be/dT0HA), led by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) colleagues Lara Clark and Kyle Messier, PhD, is a fantastic review of geospatial exposure models and approaches for health data integration in environmental health applications, such as the Climate and Health Outcomes Research Data Systems (CHORDS) project: https://lnkd.in/epTcyhBF.

And here it is, the 5th paper published in our shiny new journal (isn't it great, seeing something grow from nothing?). Elizabeth Chatpar, Keeve Nachman, Iman Habib, Sara Lupolt, PhD, MPH, and colleagues with their Time Activity Data systematic map protocol. We love working with ECRs, and we also really appreciated being invited to two of the authors' Masters thesis presentations (which were fantastic). If you have been following the preprint and evaluation process, you will have already seen it. If not, the evaluations are linked from the PDF, which you can see here: https://lnkd.in/edUb7-iM

What role do economists play in rewilding projects? In a new blog, Tim de Kruiff discusses how environmental economists analyse the choices people make in relation to nature and the environment. To learn more, join our next Green Shoots webinar on 4 June where we'll be digging further into this topic and learning how rewilding affects economic and recreational value of nature in Denmark.
