Controller

Spotlight Energy is hiring an experienced Controller in its Houston, TX office. This role will lead financial accounting, reporting, and analysis activities for the business. The role will work closely with the company’s CFO and financial team and be focused on areas like monthly close, financial statements and P&L reporting, audits, bank compliance reporting, receivables and payables, and consulting and coordinating with tax advisors. The role will also contribute by providing similar functions for Spotlight Power LLC under a service agreement with that separate company that shares some common ownership. The ideal candidate will be a financial professional that shares our goals and values, has experience with energy/natural gas/power/commodities, and is driven to succeed in a team environment.

Responsibilities include:

· Execute on a consistent and timely financial close process each month

· Deliver monthly GAAP and “Economic Profit” financial statements for both companies, with assistance of Senior Accountant, including review and approval of journal entries, margin tie out with reports from Risk Management group, and review/analysis of monthly overhead variances, and review of account reconciliations/roll forward

· Lead the annual financial audit process with our external auditors and assist with annual bank collateral audits

· Enhance our newly implemented NetSuite system to gain efficiency and clarity in financial reporting

· Innovate by bringing efficiency and enhancements to things like the financial reporting, corporate cards / travel & expense reporting, and invoice approvals and tracking

· Understand and assist in the preparation of collateral and position reports submitted to financing banks weekly for Spotlight Power and semi-monthly for Spotlight Energy

· Review and file monthly Canadian GST/HST return

· Coordinate with outside consultants regarding state income tax, sales tax, and property tax reporting and filing requirements

· Collaborate with accounting firm on state and federal income tax payments and filings

· Assist the CFO and other finance/accounting department staff in supporting our commercial operations and in maintaining positive relationships with the appropriate counterparties, including but not limited to banking relationships, auditors, credit managers, and similar outside personnel

Requirements:

· Accounting degree from an accredited school with typically 8 years or more of experience in accounting/finance in the natural gas and/or electricity marketing and trading sector; CPA not required but preferred

· Excellent attention to detail and organization skills

· Works well in a team environment

· Strong written and oral communication skills, and analytical abilities

· System: very proficient at Microsoft office apps especially Microsoft Excel including experience with building and manipulating pivot tables and building formulas such as VLOOKUP; experience with accounting systems (NetSuite experience a plus); experience with energy trading and risk management (ETRM) systems is beneficial

· Foreign currency experience useful

Job Type: Full-time; primarily in office with some limited remote work possible

Compensation: Salaried with generous profit share
