Engineering Intern

MRP Rocky Road and MRP Elgin are currently recruiting for an Engineering Intern to join our team.

The successful candidate will work in the summer of 2025 under direct supervision of the facility management team. The Engineering Intern applies knowledge of engineering principles and practices to a variety of assignments in support of facility operations and maintenance.

The selected candidate will be assigned small projects or portions of larger projects, shadow and assist operations and maintenance personnel, make recommendations for resolving assigned technical challenges and problems, assist with regulatory compliance, and contribute to overall facility reliability.

MRP Rocky Road is a 333 MW simple-cycle power plant located in East Dundee, IL. The facility is comprised of three Siemens Energy-Westinghouse 501D5A Gas Turbines and one GE LM5000 Gas Turbine.

MRP Elgin is a 484 MW simple-cycle power plant located in Elgin, IL. The facility is comprised of four Siemens Energy-Westinghouse 501D5A Gas Turbines.

Job Responsibilities

• Knowledgeable and adheres to all safety procedures including hazardous energy control (lockout/tagout) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Participate in daily activities associated with the safe and reliable operation of the facility.
• Gain knowledge of simple cycle electric generating plant operations through team interaction and self-directed research.
• Work activities may include such items as preparation of reports, calculations, specifications, and scope documents as well as generating sketches and drawings to support projects.
• Work with the facility equipment and learn to analyze and troubleshoot problems.
• Assist the operations and maintenance departments with daily and routine activities such as system and equipment surveillance rounds, troubleshooting efforts, and researching equipment needs.
• Establishes good working relationships with facility teammates, team leaders, and management.
• Participate in training programs as assigned, including both instructor led and computer based, with a focus on health, safety, environmental, technical (power plant operations and maintenance), and human resources.
• Assists with special projects, as assigned.
• Expected to develop and present an “Exit Presentation” highlighting their accomplishments during the internship to facility staff.
  
  

Required Skills / Knowledge

• Able to follow instructions and be a team player.
• Effective verbal and written communications skills.
• Ability to read P&IDs and electrical schematics is a plus.
• Advanced user knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Access, and Outlook).
  
  

Experience

• Previous demonstrated experience in an industrial production environment with a proven record of accomplishment is preferred, but not required.
• Mechanical aptitude is desired
  
  

Education Requirements

• Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in an ABET accredited Engineering program at a four-year college or university.
• Electrical, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering (or equivalent) students preferred.
• Must be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior status.
  
  

Physical Requirements

• Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Ability to do walking, reaching, climbing, and stooping and lifting (up to 50 pounds).
• Ability to enter confined spaces and work at heights. Position may by required to travel and work in Elgin, IL.
