Job Overview
The Controls Engineer works closely with project engineers, project managers, and ESI’s O&M teams to provide industrial control system design for the company’s ongoing biogas utilization projects. The position requires implementing sound engineering principles to ensure project designs are at the industry’s cutting edge. An ability to work independently, self-motivate, and communicate effectively with team members is of the utmost importance to this position.
Reports To
The Controls Engineer reports to the Lead Controls Engineer as a member of the Instrumentation and Controls group.
Location
Hybrid Remote/Office based out of Sisters, OR (Headquarters), or Denver, CO (Satellite Office).
Full remote option available for Senior Controls Engineers with at least 10+ year experience.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Design and review control system documentation including Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), equipment and instrumentation specifications, data sheets, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), control narratives, I/O list, electrical drawings, and operation manuals.
- Specify measurement and analysis instrumentation and control components for automated industrial process control and plant safety.
- PLC programming and SCADA design.
- Prepare and review UL panel drawings for fabrication.
- Participate in project HAZOP studies.
- Support the review and response to contractor RFIs.
- Support Field Service work with through remote and on-site process troubleshooting and optimization.
- Plan and participate in on-site startup and commissioning activities.
- Interact with other engineering disciplines and departments throughout the company.
- Seek ways to improve and promote quality, demonstrating accuracy and thoroughness in all work.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- This is a mid-level position requiring 3+ years of control engineering-related experience in some of or all the following industries: Renewable Energy; RNG - Renewable Natural Gas and Biogas-to-Energy; Gas Processing; Chemical; Power; Waste Management; Environmental Air Quality Control System, Other Industrial Process Automation.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a similar technical field from an accredited university.
- Working knowledge of ISA, NFPA, UL, safety codes, fire codes, and other industry standards.
- Proficiency in process control instrumentation and common data communication protocols including Modbus & HART.
- Proficiency in Studio 5000 PLC programming software.
- Experience tuning control loops.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of software. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 25%.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency with Rockwell Automation, GE and Automation Direct products and ignition software.
- Proficiency in SCADA design.
- Proficiency in Gas Analysis.
- Proficiency in UL panel design.
- E.I.T. certification or ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.
- Experience in maintenance planning and preventative maintenance strategies.
- Advanced optimization, trouble shooting, and/or process design skills in a process simulation package.
- Experience in process optimization, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis (RCA) in an energy or manufacturing environment.
- Experience with process metrics and reporting key performance indicators (KPI).
- Ideal CandidateExcellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to deal with complex problems and present recommendations and findings in a clear, concise format; ability to interact effectively at all levels within and outside of ESI. Ability to communicate effectively with team members, vendors, contractors, and leadership.
- Quick learner who adapts well to a fast-moving environment and gets things done, combines creativity, problem-solving skills, and a can-do attitude to overcome any obstacle.
- Highly motivated and willing to take on multiple responsibilities at once; strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask in an environment with changing priorities.
