The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air, land, and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes and the preservation of the state's wetlands and coastal resources.

Who We Serve

Massachusetts was the first state in the nation to combine energy and environmental agencies under one Cabinet secretary. The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EOEEA) serves Commonwealth residents interested in outdoor recreational activities, clean energy solutions and those who work with animals and livestock. Equally, EOEEA works with energy consumers, power companies, clean energy providers and farmers to delicately balance the interaction with environmental protection laws and regulations while being a cornerstone for our economic prosperity.

Job Opening

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, seeks applicants for the position of Contracted Student Intern – Mercury Program Outreach Internship to perform the following duties:

Position Summary

Mercury Program Outreach Internship

Assist with the grant program to deploy alternative lamps in schools located in Environmental Justice communities. The intern will update and maintain MassDEP’s Mercury website with information on the location of mercury-added lamp recycling collection sites. The website will be updated with information on how to identify mercury-added lamps and how and where to properly dispose of these lamps. The intern will also prepare guidance documents and fact sheets for the website.

  • Communicating with government agencies at all levels, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), lamp haulers and recyclers, lamp distributors, retailers, etc. as to distribute the provided information about the disposal of mercury products by MassDEP.
  • Review current outreach education materials and assure that they are consistent and up to date with federally advised methods.
  • Assist with the streamlining efforts to make the MassDEP’s Mercury Disposal page more user-friendly and concise.
  • Expand efforts to allow for Environmental Justice Communities to obtain easy access to mercury disposal sites.
  • Assist with the organization of data for the distribution of mercury spill kits to municipalities throughout Massachusetts.
  • Assist with the creation of a lamp replacement grant program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, SharePoint, OneDrive
  • Ability to navigate through Code of Massachusetts Regulations.
  • Organizational skills
  • Data analysis and presentation skills.
  • Writing skills that are clear, concise and easily understood by all reading levels.
  • Experience using reputable sites for research.
