Would status quo be easier?

Would status quo be easier?

Years ago, when I was working in my PR consulting business, I had a client that served a population of people who were often in and out of jail. As their communications consultant, I wanted to tell the story of the people who were in jail and how they got there. I had to push to get access to these people, and it was even harder still to have them sit and talk with me.

I finally had the opportunity. It was all set up. The individual - who was currently in this client’s halfway house - had agreed to speak about his story. And so we talked. I found out a bit of his background (discovered we were from the same hometown even), what got him to where he was and how he was now out of jail and getting ready to live on his own again. I spent time getting to know him, writing his story and preparing it for my client, a not-for-profit in the city. One day, a few months later, I asked how this man was doing. I was told that he had reoffended and had gone back to prison. “Why?” I asked, innocently. “What would have prompted him to do that?” “Fear of success” I was told.? As I was not familiar with the world of being incarcerated, or what got you there, or why in heaven's name you’d want to go back, I got curious. And I discovered that some people fear success; fear being seen; fear being in the world on their own. It’s something I hadn’t thought a lot about before. But it’s true.?

Sometimes, we self-sabotage when faced with a new experience. We hide. We decide we don’t want to be successful or visible after all, because the status quo - frankly - can just be easier. This month, I’ve been talking about visibility, what it means to step into that limelight in your business or take a risk at work and speak up. Women have historically been the quiet ones – it takes more for us to speak up and often have to raise our voices louder than men to be heard. On the blog I explore factors getting in the way of women allowing themselves to be seen and speaking up, for increased visibility and success. Read on for some actionable steps you can take to increase your own visibility and advocate for your ideas, with confidence.

FROM INVISIBLE TO INFLUENTIAL: WOMEN CONQUERING WORKPLACE VISIBILITY

How to gain more visibility at work and in business

“I want women to be seen,” my client shared with me. “So many of these women have worked so hard behind the scenes for so long, and they deserve to be recognized.” This particular client was talking about the work of rural women – women who work largely on farms and small towns, largely in isolation away from the more urban, corporate environment many of us are used to. However, it really got me thinking....... Read on to hear me finish that thought.
