Family caregivers provided an estimated 36 billion hours of unpaid care worth $600 billion in 2021. This labor is often unseen and undervalued. Like many others with chronic disease, many people with myasthenia gravis depend on family and friends for help with tasks of daily living, medical care, and emotional support. Caregivers deserve respect and the resources and support they need to care for their loved ones and themselves. Thank you to the caregivers and loved ones this National Family Caregivers Month. #Caregivers #NationalFamilyCaregiverMonth #CaregiverAppreciation #myastheniagravis

I was 18 when I was diagnosed with generalized Myathenia Gravis. I was just barely out of high school and hadn’t even decided what I wanted to do with my life yet… at 18, we’re supposed have an idea or know what we wanted to do and we go to school for it. I had thought I wanted to be a teacher or a nurse or maybe join the military and serve my county while getting to travel… Navigating this complicated neuromuscular disease while trying to navigate life as a young adult was definitely challenging and having to start over from the very beginning or changing course midway into a degree program was disappointing on many levels. I wanted to be able to do what everyone else did, I wanted to graduate from college after a minimum of 2 to 4 years and go right into a great career and be super successful, whatever that meant. After trying, and physically failing, at some of the careers I thought I wanted to do, I eventually realized I needed to figure out what my talents and strengths were and find a career that allowed me to use those strengths and talents. It took time to figure out my life with Myasthenia Gravis but it hasn’t stopped me. It only changed the career path I thought wanted to go down to a career path that I’m glad I went down instead. I agree with Jesse’s message - “Don’t let what you can’t do be a defeat.” #mgstrong #myastheniagravis
In honor of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we're sharing a story about changing directions and paving a different path forward.? Generalized myasthenia gravis derailed Jesse's career as a project manager and his goal to become a firefighter. But after his diagnosis, he has found strengths and talents he didn't know he had. Jesse says, "Realizing that I could not do the work I used to do was very tough on me. It impacted me both emotionally and mentally. But when you’re forced to slow down and retool, you can do something you never expected. Don’t let what you can’t do be a defeat."
