Hot take: Photography IS actually just pressing buttons... ... and that's coming from a working photographer Incredible photographers are a dime a dozen. In the past decade, I've seen friends of mine buy their first camera and launch their business within a month. My chef friends have self-learned the basics of finding good light and angles and taken incredible images on their iPhone. Busy business owners, finding someone to take a pretty picture for your brand is not difficult. But can they: 1. Understand your marketing goals and how their photography can support your brand? 2. Take your creative vision and 10x it? 3. Be upfront about the numbers and set realistic expectations? 4. Meet deadlines & respond to your emails on time? 5. Stay current with trends and understand how certain lighting, colors, and look & feel are favored for engagement? 6. Collaborate with you on the bigger picture instead of hyper-focusing on the details? 7. Help reduce returns and increase satisfaction with clear photography? 8. Build your long term brand equity? 9. Improve your conversion & CTR? 10. Partner with you for the long run and not just for the gig? ?? I share this because in a noisy creative marketplace, it can be tempting to book the photographer with a high follower count, who has posted work with a big brand, or who has a sexy portfolio. ? I have redirected clients to invest in SEO, social media marketing, and other creative services because the challenges they shared with me — that they thought photography would fix — could not be fixed with pretty photos. ???? Because I could not in good conscience take their money if I knew it wouldn't absolutely be worth it. So no, I'm not bashing photography or other photographers. Have you ever heard the term flat lighting? Here is an image I took while experimenting with this video light I bought. This kind of light would be considered flat lighting.
