How can you help leaders develop self-reflection skills?
One of the best and most powerful ways to model self-reflection that I've found in my own practice as an executive coach is to ask the simple question, about once every few months: "In the future, what ideas do you have for how I can be a better coach to you?" Then I listen intently, ensure understanding, and actively take notes. Then, the next tie I ask the question we revisit their suggestion for more feedback.

How can you help leaders develop self-reflection skills?
My research team empirically defined 7 types of self-knowledge separating the self-aware from everyone else. 7 Pillars of Insight (+1 reflection question) Values: Who are my heroes and what is it about each that I admire most? Passions: What activities do I never seem to get sick of and/or lose track of time while I'm doing them? Aspirations: What legacy do I want to leave in my work and life? Fit: Which environments and people give me energy, and which drain me? Patterns: Do I get my energy from people and things around me (extraversion) or do I recharge on my own (introversion)? Reactions (Strengths): What have I accomplished that has genuinely surprised me? Impact: What impact do I want to have on my most important stakeholders?

How can you help leaders develop self-reflection skills?
My decade of research on self-awareness uncovered a surprise: successful self-reflection hinges on the questions we ask. Specifically, "why" questions ("why am I in such a bad mood?") are remarkably ineffective. Our unconscious thoughts, feelings, and motives often elude us, creating answers that feel true but are often wrong. What questions should we ask? Our research with highly self-aware people showed a clear pattern of "what" questions. Consider Jose, who hated his job. Instead of asking "Why do I feel so terrible?" he asked, "What are the situations that make me feel terrible, and what do they have in common?" This helped him identify a pattern of dissatisfaction, empowering him to pursue a more fulfilling job elsewhere.

Insight: The Surprising Truth About How Others See Us, How We See Ourselves, and Why the Answers Matter More Than We Think
Crown (Penguin Random House - May 02, 2017)
The first definitive book on the science of self-awareness, Insight is a fascinating journey into everyone's favorite topic: themselves.
Do you understand who you really are? Or how others really see you? We all know people with a stunning lack of self-awareness—but how often do we consider whether we might have the same problem?

Do you understand who you really are? Or how others really see you? We all know people with a stunning lack of self-awareness—but how often do we consider whether we might have the same problem?
Research shows that self-awareness is the meta-skill of the 21st century—the foundation for high performance, smart choices, and lasting relationships. Unfortunately, we are remarkably poor judges of ourselves and how we come across, and it’s rare to get candid, objective feedback from colleagues, employees, and even friends and family.
Integrating hundreds of studies with her own research and work in the Fortune 500 world, organizational psychologist Tasha Eurich shatters conventional assumptions about what it takes to truly know ourselves—like why introspection isn’t a bullet train to insight, how experience is the enemy of self-knowledge, and just how far others will go to avoid telling us the truth about ourselves. Through stories of people who’ve made dramatic self-awareness gains, she offers surprising secrets, techniques and strategies to help readers do the same - and therefore improve their work performance, career satisfaction, leadership potential, relationships, and more.
At a time when self-awareness matters more than ever, Insight is the essential playbook surviving and thriving in an unaware world.

Despite all the research telling us that effective leaders do both, most of us struggle to balance the happiness of our teams and the health of the bottom line. We are more comfortable focusing on one or the other, and we feel overwhelmed and drained by the challenges we face when we try to accomplish both.
