Procurement as a function has lost 40 years of progress due to COVID. We went from: - procuring strategically for the right price, right conditions, at the right time and from the right sources, - directly adding savings to P/L, - thinking many years ahead in projects, - being taken seriously by management, - knitting a strong chain of planning collaboration from supplier to customer, - constantly upskilling passionate team members and providing a carreer. To: - to panic buying for whatever price from whichever source, - being reduced to a purchase order flipping / admin function, - zero savings commitments, - hiring just whoever will do it for half the salary, - shameless greenwashing and monkey-see-monkey-do-ing. Is it time to call it quits? How long until we get back to 2019 levels? 5 years? 10 years?
