    Summary:
    Gene regulation is a highly deterministic process implemented by gene regulatory circuits. These circuits operate according to principles of logical computation, and are the fundamental computational elements actuating the directed processes of growth and development in complex biological life. A robust computational theory of gene regulation, and its evolution, has the potential to revolutionize both medicine and engineering.

    In this paper, I use computational and mathematical models to show that robust functional gene circuits are parsimonious, minimally complex, and that such designs are favored by evolution. Further, I show that these results are consistent with real biological networks, regardless of species or network size. The results from this research identify a fundamental principle governing the evolution of biological complexity and suggest a null expectation for the properties and topology of a functional gene network. The results of this finding suggest a method to reverse engineer gene networks from expression data.
