A new event at Great Lakes Gaming ! On Saturday October 5th, we are partnering with students in the DMST 120: Video Game Design course at the University of Rochester. Students have been learning various game design techniques and theories, now with this event they are being put to the test. These students must now teach you, parents and kids, how to make a game. This first session will be taking the classic ‘Chutes and Ladders’ and the UR students will guide you on adding your own twist to make the game your own. More event details and tickets are available here: https://lnkd.in/eHUmy2iv There are limited spots, sorry! So please make sure if you’re interested to purchase tickets soon. We’re just two weeks out. If you have questions please don’t hesitate to comment as others may have the same question. Thanks for reading and let’s make some games! This summer, Great Lakes Gaming, hosted 10 weeks of camps, 6 of which were focused around esports & video gaming. Incredibly, GLG was blessed to have hosted 80 campers, ages 8-16, from 28 different schools in the Rochester region. This up 10 TIMES since last years camps of only 8 campers. You can read more on the camp report as well as join our new email list for upcoming youth events & activities: https://lnkd.in/eiZ3DjR5 We were truly blessed to have met Allen Pinkins & Rebecca Ferri from the Education Success Foundation which led to so many more conversations on hosting these camps. Thank you everyone at Greater Rochester Afterschool & Summer Alliance (GRASA), especially Raegena C. Lawrence for believing in our mission and everyone else at the Rochester Area Community Foundation for supporting these programs. We concluded our 6 weeks of camps with a massive group from the Rochester R-Centers. This, was a fun week for sure. So many incredible campers of all ages working and playing together. I couldn't have asked for a better group to end our gaming & esports sessions. Lastly, thank you to the incredible team at GLG. You guys all made this possible and I couldn't have done it without you! Akber Ahmed Jay Horsfall Miguel Hsu Luke Straut Zachary Eggebrecht Emma Mankowski & Kent Reese #Rochester #Esports #Gaming

We are wrapping up our first session of the BuildIT summer camp with Shift2 with a final presentation. We ask the campers each week various questions such as, what they liked or didn't like, what they learned, what they would like to see next time and more. Here are some of the answers from this week's campers: "I liked trouble shooting problems and making a tutorial video on how to fix the problem" - A. "Learning what a bloated (lithium) battery means and to not throw it away, but recycle" - M. "I'd like to keep developing my game (a racing game) on my new laptop" - T. "Continue learning computer networking by going to college" - T. We had an incredible group of 24 campers these last two weeks, it'll be sad to see them go, but we will be right back at it next week with 23 more ?? Last week we concluded our 2024 Gaming & Esports summer camps. We had the pleasure to end with a big group from the City of Rochester R-Centers as a part of their summer sports camps. During this session we did many competitions in games like Fortnite & Smash Bros, but we also introduced them to knew games like Tekken 8 and Valorant. This summer we also worked with EnCompass: Resources for Learning / The Hive to provide a new summer learning experience. During these sessions we did a ton of gaming, but also explored making Minecraft mods and video editing highlight reels from their game play. Overall we did 6 weeks of gaming and esports this summer with nearly 80 campers, that's up from two weeks and only 8 campers last year! Thank you Allen Pinkins & Rebecca Ferri from Encompass for their support and bringing their awesome program to us at GLG. Big shout out to Raegena C. Lawrence and Greater Rochester Afterschool & Summer Alliance (GRASA) for helping us with grant support to offer opportunities with campers in our surrounding downtown area. And thank you too all of my incredible staff that made it such a fun and exciting experience for these campers.
