Inception or why the very concept of XR might be hard to grasp (part II)

I really enjoyed the Inception movie. One of the many things that stroked me in this movie ( making "sparkles in my mind" for those who know me ) was the concept of a dream in a dream. Saito ( interpreted by Ken Watanabe) summarizes it as follow :

"A dream within a dream. I'm impressed. But in my dream, you play by my rules."

It was really hard for me after seeing the movie not to discuss about all the potentialities of embedded dreams. This idea is so rich that you can find infographics and flowcharts to get the whole pattern of a dream in dreams explained. It is really hard to explain that within the 4th level of dreaming the laws are changing , but you are mostly making the rules yourself ... (Loosing you again ? )

Linking this to XR, once you are familiar with the concepts and the limits of each immersive experience, you understand that

A) you can build AR/VR/MR/XR with the same technologies/engines

B) you can experience them in various ways with various devices

C) with XR you can mix things, universes and realities

And this the 2nd point where it is hard to grasp ( 1st point was covered here), because you can do things simply, ie doing Virtual Reality experience (like Vader Immortal series - an absolute must try) or Augmented Reality experience (like Pokemon Go), but you can also do:

1) AR in VR, working on any VR headset as well as any laptop (like on this experience developed for us by Ronik)

2)VR in AR, working from a phone (like in this AR portal experience from Stambol)

3) VR in VR, on VR headset (and virtual ones) like in this fantastic game : Virtual Virtual Reality

4) RR in VR headset, like this service available on the NBA website allowing to watch live games - Dear Boss, if you read this, note that I picked a game happening in the Oracle Arena ;)

5) VR in RR, like when you have a virtual fish bowl running in a holographic display like this one from the looking glass library , and it would help saving sea life as detailled here

6) And so many other things - you are welcome to share other examples and ideas around combining in any way you may think of !

Note to self : To make it more friendly, I would suggest not to mention anything beyond VR or AR when talking about the XR topics with audiences unfamiliar with the concepts.

Extra Thought : Still it is a shame because I really wanted to talk more about holographic displays. Question to you : if I capture a photo of my VR headset with my iPhone in portrait mode so I can use it in the LookingGlass, is it XR as VR in RR in Holo ?
