This week’s episode of “How Did They Build That?” features the story of Chicago’s Aqua tower and includes a cameo by MKA President Dave Eckmann! Titled “Subways & Sightlines,” the episode describes Aqua as a sculptural high-rise with rippling balconies breaking the mold in Chicago. The structure’s cantilevered balconies variably extend as much as 12 feet to create a visually unique “rippling” effect throughout the tower’s 87 stories. MKA’s design incorporates advanced structural analysis and column-hung flying formwork to achieve this unique and visually stunning effect, resulting in 70 distinct floor slab conditions using slabs just nine inches thick. The Overlook Walk opens to the public today! The 50,000-square-foot elevated park provides 360-degree views while bridging the nearly 100 vertical-foot-gap between Seattle’s newly redeveloped waterfront and the city’s famed Pike Place Market. MKA is among the Engineers of Record on the project. The Overlook Walk marks the near completion of Seattle’s waterfront transformation as part of the City’s Waterfront Seattle Program—the largest collection of civic projects in Seattle since the 1962 World’s Fair. This week’s episode of “How Did They Build That?” features the story of 150 North Riverside in Chicago, with segments told by MKA Senior Principal and Project Manager Rob Chmielowski. The concrete structural blade core MKA developed for 150 North Riverside is one of the most slender ever created for a high-rise building, standing at 750 feet tall and 39 feet wide for a jaw-dropping aspect ratio of 19.2-to-1. The tower’s design also features the world’s largest rolled steel sections and the first use in the world of a water tank damper on a blade-core building. The Seattle Aquarium’s Ocean Pavilion opens to the public today! This 50,000-square-foot addition includes three new immersive habitats and increases the Aquarium’s capacity by almost 50%. MKA is the Structural and Civil Engineer of Record for the project. “From a structural engineering perspective, it’s no surprise the new Ocean Pavilion’s main habitat, The Reef, gets most of the attention,” said Hannah Bonotto, Ocean Pavilion Construction Project Manager. “But I hope visitors also appreciate the exposed structural steel throughout the building.
