A fascinating documentary examining Oregon's unique approach to land use planning. Unlike the suburban sprawl prevalent elsewhere in the U.S., the Urban Growth Boundaries keep Oregon cities compact and conserve farmland and natural areas. It takes you behind the scenes of the remarkable political process, public opinion influence efforts, hard-fought bipartisan compromises, and near-miraculous D/R cooperation that made these innovative land use controls a reality. https://lnkd.in/gY6JAaGE

This was a project for my JRN 212 course - Digital Journalism. For this infogram, I wanted to do something different, as most of my journalism projects have been about politics. I talk about and explore how finning sharks is environmentally harmful and unethical. There are more than 100 billion sharks being killed annually, with a little less than 40% of all shark populations being critically endangered (as of 2023). If you click on the link below, you’ll be able to access the full project.

Creating new climate equity narratives and building ecosystems across tech, media & sustainable finance | Comms Strategist | Columnist | Author | Screenwriter
Coastal US cities are sinking as sea levels continue to rise. It’s happening in Norfolk, VA—the heart of Virginia’s largest economy and home to the world’s largest naval base. There is currently no public plan to prevent the area from going under water. Hip Hop Caucus President & CEO @revyearwood shares a brief synopsis of the new short film “Underwater Projects,” which explores the environmental injustice and redevelopment plan residents are facing. Co-directed by Liz Havstad and DREAM HAMPTON and narrated by #WandaSykes, the film takes viewers on a journey into Norfolk’s St. Paul’s district, a historically Black public housing community on the frontlines of climate change. While highlighting perspectives from community leaders, scientists, government officials, and national security experts, the documentary showcases the resilience of the people, and the fact that this kind of environmental degradation is happening all around the world. As a daughter of immigrants and an immigrant myself, I often reflect on how to discuss the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month with my children. It’s a time to honor our ancestors, who maintained their freedom and autonomy despite the challenges they faced. We recognize their courage to speak up and fight against injustices they encountered daily. Thinking back on the sacrifices made by my parents in pursuit of the American dream, I remember living with my grandmother in the small town of Ciudad Guerrero, with fewer than 5,000 people, while my parents immigrated. This experience shaped my journey in unexpected ways, giving me time to dream by my grandmother’s side and develop a deep care for others. My career in the gas industry began at the Phillips Los Angeles refinery, where I discovered a passion for ensuring the safety of frontline workers, many of whom come from backgrounds like mine. I always think about how they can return home safely to their families. Leveraging technical expertise, process safety, and innovation, I strive to make a real difference. I have the privilege of leading a global team and connecting with amazing individuals from around the world. I attribute my leadership style, deep care for people, resilience, and adaptability to my Latin heritage. I love getting to know the people I engage with and bring passion to every endeavor, whether it’s cooking, gardening, or setting engineering strategies to support our businesses globally. #HispanicHeritageMonth #ImmigrantJourney #Leadership #SafetyFirst #GlobalTeam #PassionForPeople

#thisistheway CAPT Chris “Chowdah” Hill is the best example I have seen of servant leadership. Every day, the Commanding Officer of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower praises (with specifics) the US Navy sailors that work and live aboard 'Ike.' This is in line with Captain Hill's Command Philosophy, 'The Way of the Warrior Sailor,' provided on his profile page (https://lnkd.in/ezWjfyvn). It's an enlightening read on balancing leadership, care, and the profession of arms that make CVN 69 'the best damn ship in the Navy,' capable of executing its mission 'to launch and recover aircraft to stomp on the bad guys.' 'The Way of the Warrior Sailor' provides actionable and measurable philosophies - understood and deliverable by sailors, commanders, and everyone that reads them - that enable said mission, such as: 1) Build a community 2) Sailor programs at 100% 3) Rapid, relentless, repetitive, and positive communication (R3P) 4) Reclaim our namesake 5) Everyone is a warrior 6) Give a damn about the material condition of the ship 7) Enhance brain, body, and soul 8) Be creative 9) Provide exquisite customer service 10) Plan like warriors 11) Sleep right 12) Give a damn about mental health 13) Squash bad behaviours 14) Drive diversity and inclusion 15) Care for loved ones 16) Safety is a no-brainer Ultimately, the CO empowers and enables each member of his crew to deliver Ike's mission and vision. That is effective and transformational leadership. #USNavy #leadership #Navy
“Keep your head up — nothing can stop you,” says this operations specialist from Anchorage, Alaska. Nothing stops her from keeping the bridge team aware of the tactical situation. She also says she misses and loves her family and can’t wait to see them soon! #thisistheway ????
