It’s All About The Experience At SGG and Associates, we are well into Q1 Earnings Season and our review of the 250 consumer facing companies that are competing for share of the consumer spend, loyalty and “mindset”. Especially striking is the extraordinary and growing divide between Walmart and Target. Walmart U.S. Comp Sales (x Fuel) were +3.8% while Target Total Comp Sales declined 3.7% There is no question that both retailers have broad appeal and audiences and offered a sense of value. ?But their approaches to the consumer have dramatically changed. Target was always known as the “cool” big box store, with incredible designer capsule collections that created lines before store opening and sold out immediately. Walmart built their following on the promise of “always low prices” and incredible value. Their roles have changed dramatically. ?Target just announced thousands of price cuts in their recent earnings report, a clear nod to the impact inflation has had on their customers, and an attempt to reverse their sales trend. A trip through Target will illuminate their almost complete shift to private labels. Walmart has introduced a balance of designer and private label brands. In their pilot “stores of the future” concept, these brands are showcased in “shops” complete with lifestyle presentations. Newness is continuously introduced into these stores. This concept test has worked and Walmart is now rolling the concept out nationally. But even more striking is the dramatic difference between Walmart and Target in the “customer experience”. At a recent visit to a newer Target store, we were greeted by an expansion of categories that were locked behind glass doors. This included everything from laundry detergent to Men’s socks and underwear. Pressing a red button on the case would supposedly summon an associate.. who never came. During the same week at several Walmart stores, associates were folding inventory, and refreshing displays. And, when asked about the location of a department, associates ( on numerous occasions) escorted us to the correct aisle. Indeed, it’s no wonder that Walmart Doug McMillon reported in last week’s earnings report that Walmart gains were coming from higher income customer. It’s not just about price.. it’s about creating a comprehensive and compelling customer experience that includes price, presentation and service.?

Aggregate demand across a multitude of manufacturing markets are directly impacted by the state of retail demand. This article/interview of former US CEO for Walmart is confirming details of an "inferior market" situation in the US that is already evident in key markets like automotive. Arguably, entire demand markets like electronics are taking hits as well. For manufacturers tied directly to GDP value chain demand, or in the case we find ourselves "True GDP Demand", finding better ways to assess their immediate and intermediate demand will be critical. Those late to the intersections of market dynamics will be behind. A recommendation: stop focusing on dollar based demand and dollar based activity! Unless your fixed costs can be managed with high variability, watching dollars movements inflated by government spending will not result in volume demand to spread out those fixed costs. Frani Chung, Claire Hayes, Paige Mirkin, Elaine Dion, Camille Bettinger, Abby Maxwell, Alexa Bestoso, Alan Creveling +++ We leveraged the powerful #FoodTok (62.9B views) and #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt (63.7B views) communities to create content that inspired culture and purchase outside of TikTok. Through social listening we saw that #lasagnasoup was trending on TikTok with over 79MM views, thanks to content creator Danny Freeman (aka DannyLovesPasta) (1.4M TikTok followers). The unexpected modification of a timeless meal, combined with a creator known for ideating wildly creative and innovative pasta recipes, provided the perfect recipe for Rao’s Homemade. In less than 72 hours, we went from flagging Danny’s #lasagnasoup post and contracting him as a partner. Then, in less than a month we recreated the viral recipe on TikTok and Instagram using Rao’s Homemade Marinara sauce. Best of all, #lasagnasoup was still popular and trending. https://lnkd.in/gmX5-AmV The Results: - We drove brand awareness for Rao’s Homemade as the go-to, premium sauce brand to elevate at-home cooking, capturing the attention of chefs, home cooks, lifestyle outlets and more, while contributing to the brand’s market momentum a couple months before it earned the #1 sauce ranking. - The Rao’s Homemade lasagna soup TikTok alone garnered 4.7M views, 634.2K likes, 1.3K comments, 261.7K saves, and 101.2K shares. - ?Danny's Instagram Reel garnered over 38.3M views, 2M likes, 4.9K comments, 489K shares, and an engagement rate of 13.32%. - The Instagram Reel was crowned the brand’s top performing post for 2023 with 118K views, 5.4K likes, and 2.9K shares. - The content partnership resulted in 255.7M+ earned media impressions stemming from 11 pieces of coverage and the brand’s owned TikTok channel gained over 25,000 followers. Within one week of the lasagna soup content and recipe going live, Raos.com experienced its highest 2023 traffic yet with a 252% increase in traffic, netting 51,858 sessions in just 3 days. Nearly 75% of sessions (36,946) directed to the lasagna soup recipe page. Now, that's what you call the power of #trendjacking, #sociallistening and #strategicpartnership.

In short, consumer spending has been surprisingly solid. There is a risk that it drops, but that is not a weakness as of the latest reporting. ?? That said, one thing which is a struggle for retailers is MARGIN. Labor costs are up and inflation is hitting supply side hard. Consumers are hunting value right now more than usual, so there is a lot of pressure from both sides squeezing out the margin. This makes it most imperative to align limited resource to sources of value as a retailer. ?? I have been developing tools and implementing practices with my data team to empower small business retailers to be able to identify and label the diverse customers in their customer base and execute strategy which acquires, develops, and retains high-value. ?? Further evidence that even "upper income" shoppers are changing behavior to combat inflation. Counter-intuitive that it's these shoppers that are driving WalMart's strong sales. Across industries, Brands with lower priced competitors are vulnerable. Reducing price is costly and can cheapen a brand. Value reframing in consumer communications is well-proven to help consumers see premium priced offerings as smart choices. Customer-centric capability is a competitive advantage. Costco understands people. They understand the business they’re in. It is not “wholesale” or “retsil”, which are superficial definitions that everybody else uses. It is no surprise that they also have a very low (perhaps the lowest) people turnover. Which means people like working there. It is not the assets they have. It is how they use them. It is not about the products but about what they mean for people when they shop there. It is about trust and perceived value. Why else would people pay a fee in advance just to have the privilege to step into their warehouse? They understand people. Better than the rest of options for consumers. And that, in my view, can be a competitive advantage. When you work with a manufacturer, size matters. Specifically, the size of your business compared to the size of the manufacturer. I find that in CPG manufacturing most “healthy” relationships occur when a brand is between 5% to 15% of the manufacturer’s total capacity. Less than 5% and the brand gets lost. Being lost at the manufacturer rarely leads to good outcomes. Greater than 15% and the manufacturer becomes over leveraged. This can work out well for the brand in the short term due to the greater leverage, but over the long run it tends to create unhealthy operating relationships and outcomes. I recommend that brands and manufacturers really focus on this “size matters” concept if you want to build partnerships that will sustain for decades and beyond. #manufacturing #cpg #beverageindustry
