Similarity Between Dating & Sales!
There's a lot in common between sales & dating! If you've done both, you'll surely relate to this!
1) Don't jump into it! You can't ask for marriage on the 1st date! You need to build likeability & trust before you can even pop up the 'M' word. And this may require multiple dates! So it is with sales. You can't push the customer into buying your product immediately. You need to build a strong relationship & nurture the prospect before selling to them!
2) Don't talk just about yourself - If you only talk about yourself on the first date, most likely there won't be a second date. People like to be heard & acknowledged. They like to be made feel special. If in your conversation, you are only talking about how great your company is, the award you won recently, the number of Fortune 500 companies that you have as clients bleh bleh... - this won't interest your prospects. Hear them out, build empathy, show them how you can solve their problem!
3) There's plenty of fish in the sea! Often times, you are envious of that friend of yours who is regularly going on dates. What they don't tell you is that for every 1 date they get, they face 5-7 rejections! (check with Tinder for actual stats!) The best salespeople are also those who face maximum rejections. It's a numbers game baby :P
4) Confidence still works - you may not be the most good looking or have a great vocabulary but if you know how to carry yourself, there's a good chance you'll land up a 2nd date. Sales is all about selling yourself first. Your product might not be the best, your pricing might not be what the customer likes but if you are confident (which reflects majorly in your body language), and you're able to build that confidence in the prospect's mind, there's a good chance of the deal going through!
5) Easy to get into a relationship, difficult to sustain one - the first few dates are heavenly. After that, the real work starts to make the relationship work. This is the tougher part. Lot of salespeople think that the deal is closed when the money hits the account. Well, you never close a sale, you always open a relationship. Post sales service is extremely crucial to drive referrals. If they like your service they will tell 10 people, but if they don't then they will tell 1000 people. So make it work for them after you've sold to them!
