A business plan is a document that outlines the different aspects of your business. People actually think that it isn't necessary to have a business plan but there are different reasons why you should get your business plan.
1. To determine if your business idea is feasible
One of the advantages of having a business plan is to check out the feasibility of that business idea, the business plan has a segment for strategy and implementation and break even analysis (how you intend to make enough money to cover your expenses) now this may not be perfect but it gives you enough description to know if the idea is feasible or not.
2. It helps you to determine your financial need?
As a business owner, you need to know what your needs are financially, where would the bulk of your money be spent, what needs should be prioritized and a business plan would give you more insight to where and how the money should be spent.
3. To learn about your target audience
A segment of the business plan is for market analysis, here thorough analysis is done for the target audience, their demographics and psychographics as well
By the time you're done with this segment, you would know who your business was meant to serve
4. To gain access to capital

Most investors would not invest in your business till they see your business plan, they wouldn't take you seriously if you don't have a business plan.
Because the business plan is meant to show how you plan on breaking even and how the money would be spent
Investors want to know that the money invested isn't spent on ridiculous things that would not yield much.
5. To outline the operations of the business
A business plan has a segment for management and operations where the business would have to outline their operations and all that they would be doing
The business owner would list out all operations involved in taking the product or services to the final consumer and all other third parties involved as well.
6. A business plan puts more priority on the business goals
There is a segment for business goals in a business plan that shows the length you hope to run the business, how you hope to make the business scalable and an exit strategy if one plans on selling the business in the nearest future.
There are more but these are the few important reasons why a business owner especially a start up needs a business plan
