The American Cancer Society has launched VOICES of Black Women, a cohort study to understand what drives cancer risk and poor outcomes in Black women. The study will recruit 100,000 Black women across 20 states and the District of Columbia, making this study the largest of its kind to date. “It’s important that we live,” noted lung cancer survivor Colette Smith. “Cancer is not the end of your life. Lung cancer is not the end of your life! Find your passion and run with it.” Colette was diagnosed with stage one lung cancer when nodules were found during a CT scan. Surgery to remove the upper-left lobe followed, and today she is cancer free and advocating for others who are facing a similar journey. “We deserve to make decisions concerning our care,” she stated. “I want my legacy to be that I helped implement policy changes relevant to lung cancer screening.” November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
