Air traffic management and control (ATM/C) is a complex and critical function in civil aviation, responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient and orderly flow of aircraft in the airspace. With the increasing demand for air travel, the challenges of ATM/C are also growing, such as congestion, delays, environmental impacts and human errors. How can artificial intelligence (AI) help to address these challenges and improve ATM/C performance? In this article, we will explore some of the potential impacts of AI on ATM/C in civil aviation.

1 AI applications in ATM/C

AI is a broad term that encompasses various technologies that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, decision making and problem solving. AI can be applied to various aspects of ATM/C, such as planning, routing, scheduling, coordination, communication, surveillance, conflict detection and resolution, and emergency management. AI can help to optimize ATM/C operations, reduce workload and stress for human operators, enhance situational awareness and safety, and enable more flexible and dynamic use of airspace.

I strongly believe there is a need for us not to be always over reliant on a tool or a method. How do I mean? A.I is a tool, just like every other technological tool or advancement. There is a need to also place into perspective the human resource into the continuous use of how a technology is applied. Even as it goes to say A.I will help reduce human stress in operational situations, we should not be too self reliant on this tool especially in core aviation operational planning such as route management, Flight planning, ERP etc, as the human factor will be lost as an important part of the industry.

In the aspect of learning and development, planning and scheduling and at times at emergencies AI technology will be really useful. This technology also will not need to deal in any stressful situation, will not require rest, which will also benefit with accuracy of the system while communcating and reading a pilots intensions in critical situations.

2 Benefits of AI for ATM/C

AI can offer several benefits for ATM/C in civil aviation, such as improving efficiency and capacity by optimizing the use of available airspace and runway resources, reducing delays and fuel consumption, and increasing throughput and traffic flow. AI can also enhance safety and security by detecting and preventing potential conflicts and collisions, alerting and assisting human operators in emergency situations, and monitoring and protecting the ATM/C systems from cyberattacks. Additionally, AI can enable new concepts and technologies for ATM/C such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), urban air mobility (UAM), and green aviation, as well as support their integration and interoperability with the existing ATM/C infrastructure.

3 Challenges of AI for ATM/C

AI poses some challenges for ATM/C in civil aviation, such as ensuring reliability and accountability, managing complexity and uncertainty, and balancing automation and human factors.
