Our leaders must dedicate more money toward social supports and government programs that support children and young people, as new U.S. Census Bureau data released today shows child poverty continued to increase in America in 2023. The U.S. Census Bureau revealed the supplemental poverty measure in America increased by 1.3 percent to 13.7 percent in 2023, meaning one out of every seven children in the country are impoverished. Unfortunately, children had the highest poverty rate of any demographic. “Poverty is a policy choice and there is a lack of will in our country to lift people out of poverty and make sure they have the best resources and opportunities to thrive,” Children's Defense Fund President and Chief Executive Officer Rev. Dr. Starsky D. Wilson recently told WVON 1690 AM. “The most significant indicator to know if you’re poor in America is if you’re under the age of 5. Children are the poorest demographic in all of America society and that is because they do not vote, they do not have a voice, and they do not have lobbyists.” The U.S. Census Bureau releases two poverty measures every year. The supplemental poverty measure, which is widely considered to be the more comprehensive measurement tool, includes consideration of income, payroll taxes, tax credits, SNAP benefits, and housing subsidies. It also deducts the necessary expenses families must pay including child support paid, childcare, and medical expenses. It found 9,962,000 million children in America were impoverished in 2023. Children’s Defense Fund Public Policy Director Lauren Reliford, MSW reiterated the need for more social support and policies that place the well-being of America’s children and young people first in mind. “If our leaders make social investments, they can actually reduce childhood poverty in America,” Reliford said. “As the temporary expanded 2021 child tax credit showed, and the subsequent doubling of poverty that followed the year after its expiration, these supports make a world to difference for young families and unleashing the joy for all young people and children in their households.” The data also showed young people who live in Black and Brown families in America are faring worse than their counterparts in other households. Close to 21 percent of Hispanic families and more than 18 percent of Black families are in poverty. Meanwhile, non-Hispanic White families saw a reduction in poverty as only 8.8 percent of such households are impoverished.

The 2 Main Problems with Wealth Screening for Major Gift Fundraisers 1. You can’t trust that it’s accurate. 2. The donor hasn’t entrusted you with that information. If you decide to ask for a certain amount based off of creepy online research, it’s weird for the donor. If the donor shares with you that they gave a $1M gift to their Alma Mater it’s very natural to one day ask… “Could you ever see yourself being excited to give a gift like that to our organization?” Wealth screening is great if you want to sort through thousands of donors. If you want to get to know your donors personally, TRY TALKING TO THEM! You’ll learn everything you need to know from the donor. You can trust that it’s accurate. I sit on the board of directors for a small non-profit that provides vision care to underserved communities around the world. Including me, there are two non-medical professionals on the board. The ophthalmologists I work with do fascinating and miraculous work with eyes. In Central America, I've had the privilege of standing next to them in an operating room, watching as they delicately cut into a patient's eye. They quite literally give blind people the gift of vision--almost overnight in some cases. Hilariously, when we get together for our board retreats, these miracle performing surgeons are FASCINATED by my stories of major gift fundraising. They are perplexed and astonished that I could feel confident and strategic enough to ask another person for hundreds of thousands of dollars. How did you find this person? How did you know they had that kind of capacity? Weren't you scared? What if they said no or got angry with you? I laugh and say, 'how on earth do you cut into people's eyeballs every day?! THAT is terrifying!'. As amusing as these conversations are, I'm continuously amazed by the perceptions people have of the work I do. Don't get me wrong, fundraising IS hard, specialized work--it requires incredible communication skills, complex strategy, data analysis, an understanding of behavioral and social sciences. I got my degree in communication studies--I literally received a formal education in how to do my job. That said, when it comes to educating and empowering volunteers to take on supporting fundraising roles, one of the first things you have to break down is the fear. Fundraising at its core is about relationship building and with the right tools and encouragement, any volunteer can support your work in a way that feels comfortable and meaningful to them.

Like many fundraisers, I didn’t think of IRA Rollovers as crucial to meeting our annual goals. I’ll admit I didn’t realize the power of the IRA Rollover, otherwise known as Qualified Charitable Distributions. As a small school with very small fundraising shop (me and one other employee doing gift processing), I honestly didn’t feel like we had the bandwidth to pursue additional messaging for IRA Rollovers. (Something I bet many of you can resonate with!) After promoting them for the first time in a serious way, I began to feel VERY differently. I now see IRA Rollovers as the perfect mix of planned giving and annual giving. Immediate gifts fulfilled now but made out of assets and therefore usually larger than the donor can afford to give out of income.
