"Huge Untapped Source of Potential Drinking Water" Brackish groundwater, a salty underground water source, is considered a “huge untapped” reservoir of potential drinking water, especially as fresh water supplies become increasingly limited in many regions. Engineers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a solar-powered desalination system that efficiently converts brackish groundwater into clean water without needing batteries or external power sources. As Jonathan Bessette explains, “this technology could bring sustainable, affordable clean water to underreached places around the world.” Using electrodialysis technology, the system harnesses on average over 94% of the electrical energy generated by its solar panels, producing up to 5,000 liters of water per day, even under variable weather and sunlight conditions. Unlike conventional systems, it responds rapidly to changes in sunlight, maximizing output without requiring additional energy storage. AtkinsRéalis wins role on largest waste-to-energy plant in the US Engineering consultancy AtkinsRéalis has won a deal to provide professional and engineering services on a new Waste-to-Energy plant in Florida that is set to become the largest in the US. AtkinsRéalis secured a 10-year, $65 million contract to provide design criteria, consulting, advisory and environmental services prior to construction of the plant in Miami-Dade county. The new facility would replace an incinerator in the county that was mostly destroyed after a massive fire in February last year. The newly constructed plant would be able to process 4,000 tons of waste per day. The incineration of waste generates heat that is used to power a turbine generator, creating electricity and other alternative fuels. But only one new WTE facility has been constructed in the last 20 years in the US. Steve Morriss, president, U.S., Latin America, and Minerals & Metals, AtkinsRéalis said, “We’re perfectly positioned to continue to support our long-standing client with the development of a green mixed-use industrial campus that creates renewable energy, while solving the County’s growing waste challenges and opening the door for similar U.S.-based projects in the future.” https://lnkd.in/eW66-a8v

I think it’s a beautiful thing when #nature & engineering align. Such is the brilliance of #floating photovoltaics - they are a harmony of essential conditions benefiting the production and transmission of electricity. It starts with the #water. Which, normally you wouldn’t think of mixing electricity and water. But with land availability deminishing, the need for generating facilities in alternative locations continues to increase. Placing modules in such a fashion also comes with benefit of reduced #temperatures retained by the water surface. Some estimates credit reductions in temperatures as having improved performance by as much as 4-5%. In some cases, water #reservoirs may already be equipped with electrical infrastructure thanks to hydroelectric power. The connection is of which is only natural, augmenting dam operations when water levels are low. But perhaps the most interesting facet here is human nature itself. Roughly 50% of all humans live within 100km of an oceanic coast. Not to mention those of us who live near lakes, canals, and other bodies of water that can be covered with PV. However, this all takes precise #engineering. This is a potential mixture of electricity and water after all. There are many inherent #dangers that must be contained. And without doubt, the safety of the public & staff must always be paramount.
