About two weeks ago, I was trying to make some findings around how the property - tech commonly known as proptech space in Africa currently is, so tried to see a couple of business models currently operational out there. It's important to note that as crucial as questioning the viability of your product is, you also need to take a few notches further, of which one is critically questioning the scalability potential. The latter plays a critical role at how you structure your business model. This might hurt, but I humbly think that If you're doing proptech and you're still the one doing property management, you're just an upgraded property agent with an app - this is just strictly my opinion. Because I don't see how you want to scale your way out of that mess, especially when you're just starting out. I know it'll feel somehow good that you're in charge of everything, but will seriously slow you down. This is the reason why the ride hailing businesses that are still managing to 'thrive' aren't the ones directly managing the cars. I think Airbnb has done a crazy cool job in simplifying the market modalities, we just need to adapt it, because it's obvious the context of our market over here is unique. Interestingly, the space still appears to have a huge latent potential to be unlocked.

Despite unfavorable circumstances, I pushed through to achieve my goal of 10k Skips. It wasn't easy, but I refused to give up. My friend's words (Harold Ngobeni), "Activities are created," resonated with me. I realized that our actions and decisions shape our reality. We have the power to create our own equilibrium, balancing opposing forces to achieve stability and success. Remember Newton's third law: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. it's my humble opinion that we mustn't let others dictate our destiny. We have the strength to push through obstacles and reach your goals. Embrace perseverance, determination, courage, believing ourselves, and we must never settle for "impossible." It is also my humble view that we are the creator of our own activities, our own success. We mustn't let anyone or anything hold us back. Interswitch, Flutterwave, and now Paystack – each with their own pace. Adaptagility. “Today we are a bank but we are shutting down some of our branches across the country. In the nearest future, we will become a company offering financial services.” In 2019, these were the words of the Managing Director of one of the leading banks in Nigeria, as we sat listening to him as HR folks. In July 2021, the ‘bank’ in the name was officially changed to ‘company.’ I have spent 8 days of the last 2 weeks with employees of a telecommunications company engaging in conversations around self-leadership and leading others. In one of the opening remarks, the transition from a telco to a techco was not missing on me. It will simply be a tech company offering telecommunications services in addition to other services. This telco is already offering financial services. As it is for companies, so for individuals, with career possibilities in the Now of Work. New skills and competencies leading to new opportunities are all around for the discerning. Re-tooling and re-skilling provide options for adaptability and agility. Adaptagility is the new abnormal. And when it’s time to show up, we leave waoh moments behind. The chances for career pivoting are immense. The future, however, belongs to those who can create it, now. Banks are struggling in the digital credit Space in Kenya. The top financial apps in Kenya are dominated by digital credit providers, not traditional banks. Even though these digital credit apps are locally registered and licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), a closer look reveals that many are foreign-owned: Zenka - Latvia Lendplus - Lithuania Tala - USA Branch - USA Some apps make it almost intentionally difficult to determine ownership without a formal company search, such as Zillions Credit Limited and Whitepath Company Limited. Notably, Whitepath, which operates multiple apps like SKYPESA, INSTARCASH, and ZURICASH, was recently fined by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) for dubious practices. Surprisingly, Safaricom is not listed by CBK among the licensed digital credit providers. This might be because it white-labels its credit products for NCBA and KCB via M-Shwari and Fuliza. Why don’t banks open up similar APIs for developers to build, distribute, and market instant loan apps? The models for decision-making, disbursement, commissions, and collections are already well-defined. Instead of competing head-on with these digital credit apps, banks could facilitate innovation by providing the tools and letting creative developers build niche solutions. Building an app for every niche and market segment is a tall order. Standard Chartered, for instance, has adopted a “Field of Dreams” strategy—believing that if they build it, customers will come. They recently launched SC Juza but they are getting outmaneuvered by nimble digital credit apps like Zuri, Zenka, and Zash Loans. Isn’t it time for banks to rethink their approach and become enablers rather than just competitors?

Competitive intelligence, often referred to as corporate intelligence, empowers organizations to transform market data into actionable strategies. Calof and Wright (2008) emphasized in their research that businesses utilizing CI are far better positioned to meet long-term objectives, highlighting its indispensable role in strategic planning. Across Africa, CI is reshaping industries. For example, South Africa’s Woolworths utilizes CI to anticipate global retail trends, allowing it to maintain its premium appeal while adapting to local tastes. By focusing on health-conscious products and ethical sourcing, Woolworths ensures its relevance in a competitive market. In the modern business landscape, competitive intelligence is not just a tool but a lifeline. It enables businesses to innovate, adapt, and lead in the face of uncertainty.
