There has to be a variety of tools available in the market. We have to know our audience when we choose the tools. The session should not get overpowered with tools that the audience is not comfortable with and the time should go into explaining the tool rather than the concept. One time in my training I did breakout room, and my teachers had no exposure to that, they did not know what to do and they exited the meeting. around 30% of my teachers dropped out of the meeting.

A con of virtual training is people are unable to meet face to face. Hence, virtual training has to be interactive and may involve digital tools and technologies. If you are simply having reps watch a video or sit through a 1-hour Zoom call, they are not going to retain much of what you want them to take away. Instead, divide the video into chunks and have activities in the LMS to answer questions, write reflections, or complete tasks to reinforce. During your Zoom call do 5 minutes of learning, and then 10 minutes of a quick breakout room for a discussion, collaborate on a document, or practice a pitch.

Though it is certainly possible, I don't think you should really 'adapt' an existing training programme to such a different delivery method, especially if your audience can be quite different (including language). The ideal would be to design it from the beginning for the 'virtual space', including how to keep the audience engaged (I like to use a few interactive tools; not too many) while bearing in mind their attention time spans and necessary breaks, choosing exercises and activities that can work online, shift from 'slide mode' to 'face to face' mode and breakout sessions, and so on. The design and pace is also fairly different if you are planning a shorter training (1-2 hours) or a multiple day training...

Preparing oneself before delivering the talk is more important than preparing the audience. You need to be in right frame of mind. Confidence level in your delivery skill has to be high. You need to be appropriately attired. You must trust your abilities to come out with your best. For achieving levels of excellence, if required, one may do a rehearsal to analyze gaps and shortcomings which can then be plugged.

Prepare and do a dry run but also prepare your audience/team and set them with expecttations? Do they know what the training is about? Do they know why? Pre Work can often be beneficial to allow you to gauge where you audience is prior to delivering the training program.

When presenting virtually, I am more exhausted mentally and physically because I feel I need to be "ON" exaggerating my voice, tone, humor, and everything involved with presenting in order to maximize the learner engagement experience. Not to mention all the things that are trying to draw your attention away from the learners with side chats, emails, presentations, and next activities that you need to glance through, prepare, ignore, or respond to. Then there is the technology portion that can sometimes creep up and knowing how to troubleshoot your systems or the systems of others based on your experience, guess or just darn luck some days. When a programme is virtual it’s even more important to prepare your audience before hand. Decide what you need them to do… eg put their cameras on, stay on mute until ready to speak or use the chat function etc. Tell them if it will be recorded and any tech info they need. All of this will help it run smoothly. Also virtual programmes can be more tiring than face to face, so regular short breaks really do help.

Also keep them engaged with polls, videos, questions, etc. There is nothing worse than being talked “at” for hours. Lastly, remember to pause after key sections to allow and respond to questions/comments from the chat.

Have a structure planned but don't plan everything :-D Have a general idea on how you want things to go but be prepared to adapt - no matter how short it is, have even a shorter version on the plan - in my experience, things always take longer in real life than planned - a parking lot helps a lot to be able to move forward from a never ending topic - have a plan for "time to spare" - I always have a question or activity prepared "just in case we finish early" One common things that I have seen happening it's that people get really engaged on a certain topic - so I spend a little more time on that and cut from somwhere else

I always leave my contact with participants and often I have a go to assistant to deal with minor questions by the participants. This is sort of like having a teaching assistant in lectures. I sometimes use this person to increase engagement and make sure the class isn’t losing their focus and attention by asking me TA to prompt answer and include others.

In my experience as an educator for more than 2 decades, I will face the audience with the positive thought "they are listening to me since they want to learn something". This approach will work both in in-person teaching and also in online teaching. During the online teaching as questions of self-explanatory and these questions subconsciously induce interest in the audience for the lecture/presentation. During the online recording, the teacher/presenter to look into audience but should not stare at them.

Needs assessment should come first. Developing the content and choosing the right tools are not effective without knowing the audience and learning from them.
