I don’t for one minute believe Labour when they say how much this VAT on Private Schools will raise to be invested into state schools… ? But I do believe Private Schools need a shake up. I would back a fairer system that forces private schools to offer a set amount of ?????? ?????????????? scholarships to students each year. That number should fluctuate depending on the deprivation levels in the area the school operates in. The higher the level of deprivation the slimmer chance you have of accessing the educational offering from the private school, so therefore the number of bursaries should be higher. ?? I know they are available in very few areas, and some will say the pandemic hit these schools hard but even before COVID many private schools did away with 100% bursaries. And a study in 2021 found that one “?? ?????? ???????? ???? ?????? ?????????????? ???????????? ???????????????? ???????????????? ?? ???????? ??????????????????????.” It also found that providing “??-????% ?????????????????? “???? “???????????????????? ????????????’ ???? ???????? ?????????????? ?????????????? ???????????????? ??????????????????”. And I agree, to me simply means those that are ‘well off enough’ to afford 75% or more of the private school fees can have an extra holiday that year. ??? ?? A bursary levy could be created in place of the VAT charge being discussed, on a reduced rate than currently being floated by Labour. Essentially, reinvesting the Levy back into the Private School sector by providing opportunities for others. In my opinion, that would make the “top class” education provided in private schools more accessible and level the playing field. A 100% bursary to a family in Oldham that wouldn’t ever be able to access education provided by Tony Oulton & Hulme Grammar School otherwise would not only change the life of that student but potentially the life of their children, and generations thereafter in that family. I say no to the VAT but YES to more socially inclusive education system. Once again this tournament is for students who are?“new to debate”??they are students who are now learning the skill and may have attended 1 or 2 tournaments prior, but have absolutely no experience. We shall be running with 3 rounds of debate in Canadian National Style – Rounds 1 & 2 will be prepared on the motion below and also on our website. Each team will have an opportunity to debate both sides of the motion. Which side you will debate in rounds 1 & 2 will be announced the morning of the tournament, as you will be prepared for both sides. Round 3 will be a fun impromptu round that will not require any research. Reminder that during prep for the impromptu round it should be done with just the knowledge you and your debate partner have to share with the judges. The tournament shall be on zoom, between 8:30 and 11:30 AM Pacific Time. The speaking times will be 6/6/6/6/ with 3/3 minutes reply speeches at the end. Reminder that the opposition if the first reply speaker. The government side starts and ends the debate. Rounds will be judged to provide feedback only. If you can provide a judge that would be appreciated. There is no cost to attend the event, but do sign up early as spaces are limited and it is open to students across the country. How to start an Equal Race? ?? My first steps into the football industry came about when new rules were published. I look back with fondness on FFP (Financial Fair Play) and TPO (Third Party Ownership) issues. They were front and centre in the press involving iconic football players like Tevez and Mascherano and world renowned clubs like Man City and PSG. It allowed we to 'start an equal race'. I couldn't compete with a football lawyer that had 20 years of player transfer experience. But I could start becoming a mini-expert in a set of rules that had only just been published.
