What's your happy?
I listen to a lot of podcasts, but the one I listen to for fun and humor is 10K Dollar Day ! It's a comedy podcast and in every episode, they have a "what's your happy" segment.
There's a saying that you can't be grateful and stressed at the same time . But there are times when it can be really, REALLY hard to feel grateful. That terrible "B" word creeps into many industries and veterinary medicine is no exception. (aka burnout).
Because we care about things - our work, giving back, making a difference, loving our families - we are going to get stressed. As I can relate to the feelings of the guest on the Vet Life Reimagined podcast this week, Dr. Elaine Klemmensen , even in the midst of fatigue, cynism, and apathy, there is hope. I'll share two things that have helped us in finding clarity and comfort.
1) For many people getting out into nature provides space, peace, clarity, and even creative thought. I took a workcation at a beach in North Carolina last week. During a very stressful work week, I took walks on the beach every night with my husband. I looked at shells and felt the sand beneath my feet and the waves wrapping my ankles. Dr. Elaine also loves nature - far more adventurous, this Canadian goes snow skiing, hiking, motorcycling, and bicycling in all parts of the world. Pick your nature.

2) Find your person - or people. Dr. Elaine and I are fortunate to have very supportive husbands. Your support person doesn't have to be a spouse or a blood relative. It may be a coach like Elaine. The right coach can be very effective because they have the training to listen and guide us through "monkey minds" and challenges of all kinds.
Even in times when you are feeling on top of the world, embrace some nature and surround yourself with supportive people.
I'm really curious to know your answer to "What's your happy," so message me what you think of and check out this amazing podcast episode (audio and YouTube ) with Dr. Elaine Klemmensen !!

1 年Elaine is a true inspiration. Her outlook on life, on work, and on how you look at every day is so positive and uplifting. After so many years caring for her patients in her clinic, she now spreads her knowledge and sunshine to other veterinary professionals and anyone looking to improve themselves and their work/life balance. Definitely an episode worth a listen!
We love hearing about the vastly different journeys in the veterinary world. Thank you for sharing Dr. Elaine Klemmensen and thank you Vet Life Reimagined for providing the platform to inspire so many. ??

1 年What a pleasure to spend a few hours with you Megan Sprinkle, DVM! Your insightful questions and ability to create a safe, fun space encourages guests to share from the heart (stay tuned for my emotional gratitude share... good grief, what a sap). I hope we have the opportunity to share more big ideas and good conversations. Thank you for having me on the podcast but more importantly thank you for caring for the people in vet med. Our stories matter AND we are stronger together and Vet Life Reimagined is a wonderful platform to bring us together. ??!
A practice owner reached out to me and said," I think these folks just like to fight! We need your help." I DID! Let me train your team on Hospitality in Healthcare. I am a Keynote speaker, writer and trainer.
