I HATE WORKING IN GRAPHIC DESIGN ?? At one point, I thought... But here's the truth: Graphic Design hated working with ME! As I near a decade in the industry, here’s what I’ve learned along the way (you’ll laugh now, cry later): 1. Stay up to date. Design trends, software updates, and evolving tools—if you’re not constantly learning, you’re falling behind. The design world moves fast, and staying informed is essential to thriving. Invest time in learning the latest techniques and exploring new design software. 2. Most people won’t give you the feedback you need. Don't wait around for praise or validation. In design, especially in a collaborative environment, criticism will come more often than compliments. That’s okay—confidence in your own work is key. Develop a thick skin and trust your creative process. 3. Don’t take anything personally. Not every project will be your dream design, and not every client will understand your vision. Don’t let that weigh you down. Graphic design is a massive field with countless niches. Keep your head up, learn from each experience, and know your value extends beyond any single project or position. 4. Master your niche. Trying to be everything to everyone will burn you out fast. The best designers specialize. Whether it’s branding, packaging, or UX/UI, honing your expertise in one area will take you further than being a jack of all trades. Three simple letters. Sometimes, that's all you get. When working with my friends at the Flamingo Resort in Santa Rosa on a logo for their newly revamped spa, that's really all I had to work with. To keep things simple, they decided to go with the name "The Spa at the Flamingo." How do you make a simple word like "spa" look striking and interesting? Well, a common exercise is to create just a "slight" tweak to a letter or two. Not so much to make it illegible, but just enough to make it look different so that it stands out. When we see a slightly different letterform, it will become more memorable, and grab just the right amount of attention to work. With this logotype, I somewhat lucked out as the font I was playing with included this unique "p." - Now, I'll be the first to admit that typically I spend hours and hours tweaking and toiling over something like this, but sometimes you happen to find your solution much quicker than expected. This "p" just FEELS "Flamingo-y" (is that a word?) without being too on the nose. The letterforms are also light enough and flowy enough to feel appropriate for a spa experience, while still being on-brand with the rest of the Flamingo property. I defintely was surprised with how RIGHT this felt so quickly. As I grow as a designer, I've learned to trust my gut about what does and doesn't work. I often have to remind myself that it isn't about the time it took to make this one logo, but really the time it took to learn about typography at such a deep level, and the subtlety of letterforms, and how to tweak and modify them. Sometimes, such as in this case, the solution falls right into your lap!

Michael persevered through challenges, refining his craft and pouring love into each design. He sought the coveted "wow" response, and eventually attracted clients who valued his unique perspective and the emotional impact of his designs on their businesses. Lesson 3: Stay true to your vision - Michael learned to stay true to his artistic choices, even if not everyone understands. Michael continued to hone his craft, seeking to captivate hearts and minds. Every client became a stepping stone towards his growth as a designer. He remained a source of inspiration, reminding designers to infuse passion and emotion into their work."

Just finished the learning path “Essential Skills in Adobe InDesign Professional Certificate”!

I recently had a potential client ask if she could just tell me about her company via email for her logo design. I declined. You see, I used to work that way. A client would email me a bit of very basic info about their company and request a logo and then I'd get to work. It was a bit like shooting in the dark, though, and often we'd end up with a lot of back-and-forth changes. The client would either like the design right off the bat or say something like, "I don't think it's right but I'm not sure why." Sigh. That's the worst feedback a designer can hear! However, I realized it wasn't all the client's fault - as a designer, it's MY job to do the hard digging to get to the very heart of their business and learn about their industry, their goals, and their target audience. So, I began asking more questions, which improved things quite a bit. However, I then began to discover that many small business owners weren't quite clear about how to articulate their brand and didn't have a clear grasp on how to bridge the gap between their offer and the needs of their target audience. And thus, my brand discovery session was born! I realized that in order to create a visual identity that hit the mark, both my client and I needed clarity on their overall brand. My brand discovery session is 2 hours of me asking and listening and my client talking. I take extensive notes and then after our session, I write up a 10+ page brand brief for my client. The brief is so valuable on its own! It contains my client's current position, my findings and recommendations for their brand, brand positioning statement, a StoryBrand Brand Script that outlines their client persona and how they can speak to the pains and desires of their clients, and lastly, my creative direction for their visual brand identity. From there, my client can hire me to do the design (which they usually do since at this point I have a solid grasp of their business) or they can take the brief back to their team to utilize.
