Panera Bread's parent company announced Tuesday that CEO Jose Due?as is stepping down, effective immediately. The change in leadership is the latest challenge to the company's plans to go public eventually, following several years of hurdles. Panera Brands CFO Paul Carbone will step in as interim chief executive while the board searches for a permanent replacement to lead the company, which includes Panera Bread, Einstein Bros. and Caribou Coffee.

Ken’s Korner Make Tomorrow Better! The Boy Scouts have long been know for their motto…..Be Prepared. This thought process works well for them and allows them to be safe if things suddenly change. In addition to being prepared I also think we need to ask what did we do today to make tomorrow better. I think this type of thinking gives you an advantage on breakdowns and process flows. The time to thing about breakdowns is before you are having them and not during them. So asked question like where are the spare belts or motor and let’s go see them. Review how you safely gain access to replace motors, gearboxes, belts, etc. This will lead to a smoother repair when the times comes. So the next time one of your folks comes to tell you it was a good day asked them what they did to make tomorrow better. That question just might lead to great weeks.

100%! Get the easy stuff right. I find this to be incredibly true in leadership as well. Get the easy stuff right: follow up with people, ask questions to seek clarity/goal alignment, communicate the vision and mission on repeat, and advocate for your team(s). Overall, be dependable.

A friend recently shared a picture of the inside of a hair dryer. Her's stopped working and always the inquisitive type she grabbed a screw driver and disassembled it. I found an interesting parallel to our business processes. Here's my tie into business: Understand Each Component: Every piece inside the hair dryer has a specific role. Similarly, every department in a business, from procurement to logistics, plays a crucial part in the overall operation. Understanding the function and interdependence of each team ensures smoother workflows. Early Indicators: A small fault in one part of the dryer can lead to a complete breakdown. In business, recognizing and addressing minor issues before they escalate can prevent major disruptions. Proactive maintenance is key. Efficiency is Key: The hair dryer is designed to operate efficiently, with each component contributing to its optimal performance. The ABA recently unveiled a new five-year strategic plan. What led to its development and how does it aim to propel the baking industry forward? When I joined the ABA about a year and a half ago, creating a strategic plan was one of the top priorities. The aim was not only to move the association forward but also to provide the industry with a clear direction for growth and sustainability. To do this, we engaged our leadership, board, and members in a comprehensive consultation process. I visited numerous companies within the industry to hear directly from key stakeholders about their challenges, needs, and opportunities. It took us about a year to put everything together, and we launched the plan in March. The plan is built around three primary pillars.
