Once again, CREW Greater Akron is hosting our Annual Holiday Charity Event to support a local non-profit agency. This year's event will benefit Embracing Futures, Inc.! Embracing Futures, Inc. is striving to make a difference in the lives of needy and underprivileged children in Summit, Stark, Portage, Medina and Wayne counties by providing financial assistance for orthodontic and other dental care, and oral health education for elementary school students. In August, CREW Greater Akron was thrilled to get a sneak peek into the construction of Market 42, a premier public market, and how it’s aimed to transform the “Getaway District” of Brunswick, Ohio! Open to the public in November, Market 42 will feature 29 food and retail vendors, indoor and outdoor seating, and walking and biking connectivity to local area residences. In September, CREW Greater Akron hosted a lunch and learn panel discussion in the heart of Downtown Akron to hear from a panel of speakers discussing their role in driving sustainability efforts. Moderated by CREW Greater Akron’s Katie Hauser IIDA, NCIDQ, LEED AP, Account Executive Interface, the panel featured Melinda Scalfaro, AIA, LEED AP BD +C, Partner SoL Harris/Day Architecture; Casey Shevlin, Director of Sustainability and Resiliency for the City of Akron; and Kyle Julien, Director of Planning for the City of Akron. Attendees gained insights on how sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated or obscure and it isn’t too late to start acting. They left with a better understanding on how the city is starting the cycle during its planning stage by shaping the policies that lead developers towards creating sustainable projects all the way to when they revitalize older buildings.
