The Power of Freedom & Flexibility: Why I Didn’t Start a VA Agency and What I Built Instead

I get asked all the time why I didn’t go down the path of creating a virtual assistant agency. The answer is simple: it wasn’t right for me. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to building a successful business. I’ve built my business on principles that prioritize freedom, flexibility, and respect for both VAs and clients, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
When I started my VA business 10 years ago, the VA agency model was the only established path to grow a virtual assistant business and make more money. I knew immediately it wasn’t for me. I needed a model that aligned with my values and my desire to create real value for everyone involved—myself, the client, and the VA. So, here’s why I chose a different path:
Reason #1: Seeking Freedom and Flexibility
The heart of my business is freedom and flexibility. I didn’t want to build a business that would tie me down; I wanted one I could step away from without worry. For me, freedom is about being able to travel, be with my family, and work where and when I want.
I know this is also the dream for many VAs. Working in an agency often means sacrificing that freedom. My goal is to create opportunities for VAs to build their own businesses without losing what drew them to virtual work in the first place. I want to honor this freedom and flexibility—not take it away.
Reason #2: Respect for Autonomy
I’ve never been drawn to management, and frankly, I believe great virtual assistants don’t need to be managed—they thrive in environments that respect their autonomy. I’ve always admired the independence and self-discipline VAs bring to their work. So why impose a model that requires constant oversight?
When clients ask why my VAs consistently perform at a higher level, I tell them it’s because I treat them with the respect they deserve. I don’t try to micromanage or control them. Instead, I provide guidance, support, and a network where they’re empowered to be the professionals they are.
Reason #3: Creating Genuine Value for Everyone
In my experience, the traditional agency model often leads to high turnover rates, mismatched relationships, and VAs who feel undervalued. I’ve always been determined to build a business where everyone involved feels valued and respected. In my model, VAs set their own rates—they decide what they’re worth, and I and the clients honor those rates.
For me, the joy in this business comes from creating “win-win-win” scenarios: the VA loves their work, the client receives top-tier service, and I get to do what I love—matching the client to the right virtual assistant.
So, What Do I Do Instead?
Over the past decade, I’ve dedicated myself to mastering the art of matchmaking, and connecting VAs with clients who truly appreciate their skills. Unlike traditional agencies, I charge clients a premium for this bespoke matching process because the value I deliver is in the quality of the connections, not in overseeing a team of VAs. This model has allowed me to grow my business without sacrificing the personal freedom I cherish.
The Future of VA Work: Licensing Freedom
While the agency model wasn’t for me, I discovered that a licensing model was the perfect fit! Allowing me to work with, assist, and match far more VAs with the right clients. Partnering with Stack , I’m now able to license my proven process, helping VAs build their dream businesses while keeping their independence intact.
