Day 5 of the search for a new contract/clients: ? WOW! What a day, it’s been hectic and long but a real motivator. As always, I have been working for the current client and making real progress in some key work. I started early and just finished so that’s been brilliant. ? I also managed to do the following: ·???????Get a walk or two in (very important – fresh air to the brain really does put me in a good mood!) ·???????Updated my LinkedIn profile to reflect my CV! It’s a small thing but one I easily forget. I always update my CV without fail and take pride in it, but I never take the same care to my LinkedIn profile. ·???????Applied to a few opportunities via my old faithful technique, Jobserve. When I do this I have one rule, no filters! By that I mean, no job title search. If you just search for Project Manager roles, you will only see Project Manager roles. If you leave that filter blank, you get to see loads more and that’s when you find the hidden gems! ·???????I’ve reached out to various people and connections. This is why networking skills are the most important you will ever have. ·???????Finally, I have taken more notice of the jobs available on LinkedIn. I have never had to before but I am loving to use the platform as a great little tool. ? I am still in that stage where it is quiet and I’ve just got started. It’s hard because it’s the summer and holidays always slow things down. But I am optimistic and really upbeat, a combination of anxious about and excited at the same time about the possibilities. So hopefully this will keep up. ? Quick update about my targets: 1.???????Work flat out to the end of my current contract and ensure my client is in an amazing position - I am going to sprint over this finish line and feel really confident! 2.???????Find a new client and new opportunity and rebuild my client list – See above. 3.???????Continue with my investment path which is always growing – had a really good week last week for investments thank to a spur on the S&P 500. Lets hope that lasts. 4.???????Create a new stream of income that also supports the charities and people around me (watch this space) – I am still weighing up the platform I want to use. One is easier to get started but my preferred one sticks in my mind. I need to get a move on and discuss that with another contact because the idea is controversial but has my target audience on it. I need to sit down tonight and think this through carefully. 5.???????For fun, a ￡10k challenge – 5% achieved already. Bit of a result. I hope things keep going that way and I will hit my target in no time at all! ? Day 3 of the search for a new contract/clients: ? Obviously it’s a bit quiet, being a Saturday and I doubt I can do much so I haven’t much to report today, although I have been working to make sure I meet some deadlines and I’ve been thinking of avenues to follow. ? Tonight I thought I would mention a few thoughts I have had today, hopefully they will help you as well. ? First of all, about the CV. And my note says “Update the CV at the start, not the end”. By this, it is a tip I learnt a long time ago – Never update the CV when you have to, its too stressful. Instead do at every time you change job instead. This is because at the start of a new job, you are likely to have a job description. That saves you a lot of hassle for updating what you do. At the end of the job, you are likely to be trying to word a million things you are trying to remember. If you do it at the start of the job and then build on it as you go, you don’t have to stress when you need it – it’s pretty much ready. ? Second, holiday perspective. So as I mention, I just got back from holiday and I always come back ready to hit the ground running. I am still buzzing and have loads of ideas in my head of different ventures I want to do. I reached out to a group Thursday to discuss one idea and they loved it (although I don’t think they are particularly keen on the platform). My next step is to reach out to a friend (who bizarrely, I bumped into unexpectedly in the airport coming home the other day) who is familiar with the platform. So I am looking forward to that and getting started. ? Clean office, clean mind. This is more for my sanity but I cleared the office out this week. Its been great because its nicer to work in and as a result of the clear out I have also decluttered to sell a load of stuff. Its said, that the average house has ￡25k of unused clutter in it and I believe it after my clear out. The nicer environment is helping me massively. ? Finally, sometimes you do your best work away from the laptop. Whilst I have all these things I want to achieve at the moment, I figure I may as well throw a few more on my bonfire for my mental health. So as of Monday, I will be getting up for my 6am walks and taking regular breaks and kickstarting the health kick. ? ?Where have the Central Gov Contract roles gone? ?? It's been a slow couple of months for new contracts due to the end of the financial year, but this comes with allocating budgets to programmes which they can then bring in more resources for! Some tips for contractors looking: ?? Networking - Most central gov contractors I know that have continuous work usually find new positions by word of mouth. "It's who you know, not what you know." Speak to recruiters (like me) and attend Government events. ?? LinkedIn - Share insightful content and connect with relevant professionals to stay on top of mind. ?? Keep your CV updated - with any new certifications and take courses to improve your knowledge further. ? Be patient - The right role will pop up. Things are already starting to pick up, it's only a matter of time as the Government has a lot of projects planned. ?? **Try a new approach to project management this year.** Even if it's just adopting one Agile practice. The worst outcome? You find out what doesn’t work and become wiser for the next attempt. RPA – Doing its bit for BT Phone Book History! Are you old enough to remember searching through the BT Phone Book to find a telephone number, instead of typing it into a search engine...? I know I am (giving away my age!). Well, you may have heard that as of March 2024, BT stopped printing these books.?With a decreasing demand and the high environmental impact of print and distribution, it was the right time for change. You can read more about that here - https://lnkd.in/eeMPQFxG To enable this huge program of work, there was a critical requirement to cease customer billing accounts, once they had paid for their final Book – It was hugely important for our customers and us, to close off that final billing activity accurately and seamlessly. This was an extensive and repetitive task, in huge volumes – There were 14,000 billing records to cease, which equated to around 2400 hours of human work. This would have taken 2 people a whole year of rather dull hard graft to complete! We definitely didn’t want to waste our great people on that and we didn’t have the grace of a year to do it either, so we called in the Digital Workforce! In a matter of weeks my awesome team had designed, built and deployed 2 RPA Bots to crack on with the task. The Bots worked almost non-stop and completed the work in less than 2 months, well ahead of schedule and only leaving a few of the more complex exceptions, that really needed the human touch! Day 2 of the search for a new contract: ? I often see on LinkedIn many people open to work and their struggles to maintain a healthy mental attitude (which is only natural really). ? So I thought it would be interesting to use the opportunity to record my journey and how it affects me. The reason for this is because I help support a group for men’s mental health called, You’re Never Alone (Chepstow). We offer a place where anyone can come and discuss anything they want, stop them from feeling alone, socialize and be a part of activities that are put on. ? By recording my journey in an honest upfront way, those who are looking for work and struggling can see that they too, are not alone and can contact me if they also need support. ? As it is close to the weekend, I will keep many of my thoughts for days 3 and 4 (which will be quiet). But at the moment, I am highly motivated, excited and optimistic. My CV is like a labour of love to me as I am always tweaking it to ensure its never out of date. So yesterday I gave it a polish, made sure its looking amazing and started to reach out to people and agencies as well as applying for potential opportunities. ? The response has been fantastic and the level of support has really shown with people sharing my profile, and opportunities they have seen. I am genuinely excited at the next challenge and what it brings. So thank you all for the early support that motivates me. ? It may have helped that I just got back from holiday. Holidays are always a time for me to reflect on what I want to do next and what challenges I set myself. I read two books on holiday, Atomic Habits which I have started applying in various ways, and Think and grow rich (something I had sitting around but never got round to reading). So these have provided me with food for thought. My targets are as follows: ? 1.???????Work flat out to the end of my current contract and ensure my client is in an amazing position. My standards must maintain until I run pass the finish line. 2.???????Find a new client and new opportunity and rebuild my client list. 3.???????Continue with my investment path which is always growing 4.???????Create a new stream of income that also supports the charities and people around me (watch this space) 5.???????For fun, a ￡10k challenge. I read that the average household has ￡25k of stuff in it that is not being used. I thought it would be fun to declutter and see if I could raise some money. If it works, I will put this idea forward to my sons PTA as and easy income stream! ? The issue with telecoms or any industry for that matter is that you never know what half the acronyms mean sometimes. Well I struggled with that at least before trying option 1: cramming them all in my head and hope to never mix the terms in a meeting, is IP, internet protocol or is IP, intellectual property, who knows?, then there's option 2: write them all down in a word document and study the terms... sometimes, and add update the file if anyone ever says something I don't understand. Or there's option 3: considering my experience in front-end [client-side], back-end [server-side] code, vast in most languages, hosting and deployment, with actual applications running in production. Why not try something new. A side hobby, create a website, one which is free, doesn't have to be good for now, just has to work. Step 1: GitHub pages - static, so we're limited Step 2: Covert word file to JSON with a quick python script Step 3: Create HTML and Javascript files, read the JSON file and provide some UI interaction Step 4: Share it and iterate until perfect Step 5: Login into LinkedIn, dust off the profile and write Post. And I know what you're thinking, how do I know which terms exist if I can't see them. I'm working on that as well ??, we're 5% usable remember.
