As if they needed another hat to wear, teachers are on the frontlines of both the prevention of and response to child abuse. Children often disclose abuse to school personnel. Spending so much time with children, it's not surprising that many students develop a trusting relationship with their teachers. While the National recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month may be over, our work to keep children safe continues. When reports of suspected child abuse are made, it’s important to remember prevention can be a result. Red flags may signal abuse however, after an investigation, it may be that abuse was actually prevented because a report was made. In other circumstances, reports of known abuse can prevent further harm and trauma to a child victim while also preventing the creation of additional victims by the perpetrator. Saying something when you see or know something means everything.
