Happy to see an updated Evidenced-Based Management (EBM) guide from Scrum.org. The new edition maintains the foundational EBM concepts while refining the explanations for better understanding and application. Notable updates include a revised subtitle, "Improving value delivery under conditions of uncertainty," which more accurately reflects EBM's purpose. The guide introduces mission and vision framing for strategic goals and acknowledges the potential for multiple strategic goals within larger organizations. Inputs and impacts are categorized as types of measures, while descriptions of the Key Value Areas (KVAs) have been clarified and aligned with different measure types. Enhanced explanations for the "Experiment Loop" and an example measure of employee engagement have been added to illustrate how these concepts help improve value delivery. In 1998 Steve McConnell published "Software Project Survival Guide: How to Be Sure Your First Important Project Isn't Your Last." One thing that always stuck with me from that book was the "Top 10 Risks List." In today's age of iterative and incremental development, it can sometimes be easy to get a little too focused on what we need to get done this sprint. We might lose sight of the big picture, especially as it pertains to risks that may impact the ability to ship. The Top 10 Risks List is simple, with just five columns: 1?? This Week - The issue's rank on the list as of right now. 2?? Last Week - The issue's rank last week (or the last time you met to review the list) 3?? Weeks on List - How many weeks has this risk been on the list? 4?? Risk - Short description of the risk 5?? Risk Resolution Progress - Notes about what's being done about the risk You don't need to have exactly 10 risks - you could have 5 or 15. The important thing is that you have the list and review it regularly with the team. This list can work especially well for Scrum of Scrums meetings, where you need to track items that may affect other teams' ability to ship.

Scaling a software development program without the right processes in place can be painful. The below visual is used in Agile training to show the exponential relationship of communication lines with team size. I've found this chart useful when discussing processes around large development programs. If you view the dots as teams, and the lines as the process to coordinate delivery, it shows that small process issues can become big issues as you scale. This can go both ways…too much or not enough process can cause problems which are amplified when adding more teams. Form100Consulting

New to Agile? Or, looking to transition from your current industry and become a ScrumMaster or Product Owner? Be aware there are hiring scams. One of my recent students almost got caught. Want clues to avoid them? Fortunately, when the student reached out to me for advice, I was able to identify some cautions. And, before they went further, we found a couple of red flags. This 4m40s video shares the caution clues AND some hints you can apply yourself to check for potential scammers before you get caught. Between 1995-2010-ish it was popular in the agile community to talk about patterns and principals. 15-25 years later we see the industrialized late adopter / laggard version of agile as the norm. I wonder if the "product operating model" (a synthesis of patterns in use for ~20y, similar to how a 2010 agile pattern language represented patterns in use starting in the 80s and 90s) will follow the same trajectory based on the introduction of domain-specific pattern languages? In 2035 will be be talking about the "death of the product operating model"? History would say....yes. The funny part about Agile is that I would say the *core* ideas are perhaps even MORE in demand (or relevant) now, even among the companies that see themselves as high performing product orgs. You can argue that *some* Agile ideas have widespread adoption, but when you look at how few companies have healthy, functioning teams that follow some of the edgier and heretical parts of the agile manifesto, you might view those companies as the "top" 1-2%.

Silly takes like this make me worry about our future as an industry. Clean Code is one of the more timeless works in our field - and Uncle Bob’s thinking in the space has done nothing but get better with the passing of time (the articles in his blog in the years since CC have been gems). I for one am excited to hear about polishing up (refactoring?) Clean Code to remove the few dated bits that are in it. More importantly - as a field, it’s important that we begin to grow up and recognize that there *are* timeless principles that underpin software development, even as you install your latest version of Rust. If memory serves, Martin starts Clean Code with a prelude comparing his coding recommendations to martial arts styles. That is, in a given style there are things that are right or wrong *for that style*. Which is far softer than I think is the underlying truth. That is, calling him absolutist is absurd.

Yesterday,?I finished teaching a two-day Scrum Foundations course with a new client. We had great discussions about?what Scrum is, what it is not, and how it can help software teams to create new products. We also had a lively?debate about potential differences with Scrum while creating brand-new software applications versus supporting a live application with thousands of users in production. As I love to do, I started and ended the session with a custom Scrum Discovery exercise to help participants visualize how much progress they have made and to collaborate (like a Scrum team) while building an increment of a small product. While I prefer in-person sessions, remote sessions are now amazing with the power of Miro boards. I can present dynamic content and facilitate interactive exercises, which has been a game-changer for me as a trainer.
