We had a great panel with folks directly involved in the "Key Site" Operational Evaluation just this week. Small UAS (Uncrewed Aircraft Systems) are really doing things in the Dallas area. Soon (hopefully!) in other part of the country. UAS Traffic Management (UTM) services are increasingly enabling this new reality! Appreciate NASA Aeronautics Research Institute (NARI) at NASA Ames Research Center for hosting us and keeping the results nicely archived for future reference. Abigail Glenn-Chase and Jonathan Nguyen did a great job putting this together. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration is happy to support the US UTM rollout with this kind of outreach. We might need to do another one of these in the near future to get to some of the remaining questions and keep folks informed of progress! The energetics community has been screaming about the lack of support literally for decades and now that hearing impairment has come to roost. Same goes for shipbuilding and shipyard modernization as well as our nuclear forces which are now all being modernized at the same time impairing other areas of greatly needed investment. With $35T in debt only 30% of the budget is discretionary and almost half (14%) is defense - the top line isn’t moving while systems become more and more complex and expensive. Augustine’s Law XVI is playing out - look it up… We need to become adept at leading strategic-level change and transformation at requisite pace and scale. The USMC is the exemplar today in that regard with their Force Design 2030 reconceptualization to become leaner, more agile and adaptive, more innovative and creative, and much more lethal. They faced tremendous blowback from the Old Guard which was not to be unexpected - exemplary leadership takes courage and commitment in the face of the winds of resistance.

#DisruptiveTech Lockheed Martin’s highly secretive Skunk Works division released a rendering of a notional stealth tanker meant for the Next-Generation Air Refueling System program, also known as KC-Z, which aims to replace KC-46 and KC-135 tankers in the 2030s. The tanker, which appears smaller than the types it will replace, is shown refueling an F-35A with the flying boom system. The aircraft in the rendering, first published by the Aviation Week Network, appears to be based on a rather large lambda wing with canted twin tails. The engines, possibly two, are buried in the fuselage, with the air inlets under the wing’s root (also called “armpit” inlets) and possibly flat nozzles in the rear. Excellent article by Treena Hein in Vertical Magazine on #SMS in #AAM! One area that I am paying particularly close attention to is how SMS can be applied to AAM infrastructure.?Part-121 operators primarily use airports that are required to be "certified" under Part-139, Certification of Airports. While Part 139 makes numerous references to SMS training and reporting requirements, it specifically states that heliports are exempt.?Regardless of their use case, complexity, number of operations, or type of aircraft supported, heliports are not required or even encouraged to have an SMS nor are they certified by the FAA. Currently, the only regulation that comes close to addressing vertical flight infrastructure is Part-135.229, Airport Requirements, which states: "No certificate holder may use any airport unless it is "ADEQUATE" for the proposed operation, considering such items as size, surface, obstructions, and lighting." In my experience, "ADEQUATE" oftentimes falls far short of being good enough.?This approach is highly subjective and is generally based on a personal bias that is often ill-informed and negatively influenced by factors other than safety. There are those of the opinion that it should be left up to the pilots whether or not to land at any given location, e.g., make a game-time decision upon arrival.?While I agree it is the pilot in command who has the ultimate responsibility and authority over aircraft operations, this methodology has already been proven to be a recipe for disaster. There needs to be a reasonable expectation, before a pilot even comes to work for the day, that the fixed site locations they will be expected to operate at meet a minimum standard.?Imagine the pressure placed on a pilot flying paying customers in an electric aircraft with limited battery life who expect to make it to their destination regardless. Now let’s add some gasoline to this conundrum, what does this look like when we start talking autonomous AAM and UAS BVLOS operations? How shall we treat AAM infrastructure, i.e., airports, heliports, vertiports, and droneports that will be expected to support AAM, eVTOL, and UAS operations??I see SMS as a great equalizer for helping to address this critical safety gap. Center for Space Policy & Strategy recently published their Space Agenda 2025. SDA appreciated the shout out in Andrew Berglund's “Strengthening the Industrial Base to Deliver Proliferated Defense Space Systems” paper, which highlighted the need for a robust supply chain and a ready defense industrial base for the DoD to be successful at transitioning to a more proliferated space architecture. https://lnkd.in/e9_EbT2M SDA approaches this challenge by focusing on building an agile market and leveraging commercial products and innovation to deliver capabilities for the warfighter on relevant timelines. This year SDA has been successful at expanding the vendor pools we work with by bringing in non-traditional and #NewSpace companies. The latest report from the U.S. Department of State – Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs offers some exciting insights into the U.S. space economy. Released in June 2024, it sheds light on the sector’s contribution to GDP, employment, and compensation from 2017 to 2022. In 2022 alone, the space economy contributed $131.8 billion to the U.S. GDP, making up 0.5% of the total economy. Even more impressive, it outpaced the broader U.S. economy with a real GDP growth of 2.3% (compared to the national average of 1.9%). To propel cislunar operations forward, advanced mapping of the Moon's surface and its gravitational and magnetic fields is imperative. The Biden administration's Cislunar Science and Technology Strategy underscores the importance of NASA's role in this endeavor. Collaborative efforts with agencies like NGA and DARPA aim to establish precise lunar maps, laying the groundwork for future missions. The next step involves enhancing our understanding of gravity in cislunar space to calibrate atomic clocks crucial for PNT systems. NGA's pursuit of a lunar reference model akin to WGS 84 emphasizes its commitment to enabling accurate PNT in space. However, measuring gravity in cislunar environments presents unique challenges, particularly at Lagrange points. Industry has a pivotal role to play in advancing these initiatives. Big News ?? out of CisLunar Industries. They are meeting the #spaceindustry need for PPUs. But, NOT just with any old power propulsion units. The newest and best PPU on the market today! ?? Houston’s Intuitive Machines has won a NASA contract to support the agency’s lunar relay systems as part of the Near Space Network. The Subcategory 2.2 GEO to Cislunar Relay Services is a new firm-fixed-price, multiple award, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity task order contract.
