The WinWon team recently attended the Business of Small College Athletics Regional Workshop in Winona, Minnesota. A huge thanks to Jim Abbott for leading another incredible event. Sarah Y., Uzoma Osuji, MBA & Austin McNicholas from the WinWon team had a blast, gaining invaluable insights from the sessions and roundtables BOSCA offers. Here are a few session takeaways from the team: In a panel entitled What Coaches Need to Be Successful, Ana Wurtz, Nick Winecke, and Jason Bonde shared valuable insights on the coaching experience: It's not just the X’s and O’s for coaches today, as they continue to take on more responsibilities for the betterment of their student athletes (academics, recruiting, retention, fundraising, community service, mental health, on field performance, just to name a few). These initiatives can take up significant time, and creating transparency between coaches and administrators on this workload is more critical than ever. With everything coaches are tasked with today, the key is to set demanding but realistic goals.?As Nick Winecke put it, the question coaches often ask is: “What bullseye am I supposed to hit today?” Beyond the sessions, another great feature of BOSCA are the Roundtables, and Danica Perner led one on "Strategies to retain Student Athletes" in #BOSCAWinona: This engaging session on student athlete retention strategies emphasized a proactive approach to academic advising and orientation. Key strategies include: an online orientation program for all new incoming athletes, an academic success plan for all student athletes, and an early identification program. The key sentiment to remember is Recruit, Relate, and Maintain, as its important to make the athlete feel recognized and valued throughout their journey. We hope these takeaways are helpful, and we hope to see you at the next BOSCA event!
