The role of hydrogen as we bridge to a cleaner energy future

Sustainability at Enbridge

Sustainability is at the center of everything we do, and we need a variety of ?solutions to accelerate a cleaner energy future.?Hydrogen is an essential part of the mix.

With the projection that energy usage will increase by 50% over the next 30 years , reaching net-zero is critical for the environment. We’re targeting net-zero emissions across our own operations by 2050.

We believe we’ll play a key role in building a bridge to a cleaner energy future and will invest $4 billion in renewables and low carbon solutions through 2025.

Adding hydrogen to the mix

Working together with Cummins and the City of Markham (Ontario), we recently launched a hydrogen blending project that converts surplus energy from renewable sources into hydrogen, which can then be blended into the natural gas system to help balance Ontario’s electricity supply and demand. The facility, currently in operation, serves approximately 3,600 customers in Markham.

This is just the beginning. The quickest means of decarbonizing much of Canada’s existing energy systems, while preserving resiliency, is scaling up hydrogen and renewable natural gas (RNG) production and blending it into the gas system. To put this practice into action we recently signed an agreement with a transport authority to provide hydrogen for fuel cell transit buses.

"Waste to Energy" is the future of climate change. RNG transportation is significantly more "carbon negative" than Total Electric when you consider the environmental cost of construction and disposal of batteries in addition to the impossibility of having enough Renewable Electricity to provide present needs for electricity plus total electric transportation plus green hydrogen production. HyGEAR can produce Green Hydrogen from RNG with only minimal new infrastructure to transport the hydrogen from the "on site" HyGEAR unit to the fuel pumps or industrial user. Current natural gas infrastructure can transport the RNG to the HyGEAR unit. It's not Rocket Science.
