Honeycomb's storage engine, Retriever, is the key differentiator behind so much of our product. I sometimes get questions from other engineering leaders about why we didn't use x or y off-the-shelf technology or product instead. There are a number of reasons I could share, but one of the most important ones is that it's usually hard to evolve someone else's offering (even if OSS) as the constraints of your business change over time. How Copilot Turned Me Into a Productivity Ninja and Why I’m Totally Hooked!! Since joining, Copilot has been my secret weapon. Here's how it’s made my life way easier: - No More Email Drowning As a newbie, I was pulled into the black hole of endless email threads. But here comes, Copilot swooped in like a superhero, summarizing everything in just a few lines. - I Actually Get Stuff Done Now After customer calls, I used to spend 20 minutes writing up notes. Now, Copilot generates them with action items in seconds. It’s like having a super efficient assistant without the weekend small talk😆 - My Sales Play Lifesaver I had a tough time remembering all the different sales plays for a complex portfolio. I fed Copilot a few details and within minutes it helped me recall the right play making it feel like I had mastered the playbook in no time. It was like brainstorming with someone who actually knows what they’re doing. - Goodbye, Email Overload I used to spend 30 minutes crafting follow-up emails after meetings. Now, I am done in 5 minutes. Copilot handles the heavy lifting, leaving me free to take a coffee break with my colleagues for the nth time today. - I Have Time for Lunch With Copilot handling admin tasks, I’ve gained back 10+ hours a week giving me time for lunch (and occasionally my sanity)😋 - The Unproductive Stuff I Still Do I still refresh my inbox 10 times a day, but now I can blame it on Copilot handling the real work. The Result: 1. 10+ hours saved/week(or roughly 5 extra Netflix Binge or solid nap) 2. Less time stressing over decisions and more time actually closing deals 3. "Everything looks like failure when you're in the middle of it." - Kanter's Law. How do you know if you can still succeed? Can you model the patience and positivity required for success? Do you know when to pull the plug? 👌 If teams still feel the change is needed, you're on the right track. Discussions about the specifics, the tooling, or the R&R are inevitable. Find the team members that love working through those details and empower them to drive. (You know who you are! Sanathan Kassiedass, Christopher Eberhardt, David Rheams, PhD) Leverage office hours, where teams can get your opinion quickly and in the open. 🥂 Early wins are usually small, but they point to the potential to succeed. I like using the metaphor of losing weight. You notice how you feel better right away. Those closest to you notice when you lose those first 10 pounds. But, you've got to get to 25 pounds before others say something. If you're still seeing small wins, ensure that you recognize that and don't dismiss them as "just iterative progress". Transformative change almost never looks like, BOOM! 10X Day One! Be patient. 😁 At my Mind the Product talk I closed with this slide. If you're still seeing smiles and laughs amongst the teams closest to the change, its probably headed in the right direction. As a leader, you've got to model that behavior. Smile, laugh, get excited and the team will follow you through the change. Team members questioning why we even need this change? Been a while since the team had a win of any kind? Are people grumbling around and at each other's throats? You better get in there and find the root causes.

Execution in difficult endeavors comes from stress testing your system for operational excellence. What gets me hot are deep tech teams that have vision but also relentless drive toward operational excellence. With the end point being customer satisfaction. I really want our community to keep sharing experiences to help those pursuing hard things to succeed. Experience sharing can unleash speed of progress. In that spirit, I'm sharing a few key diligence areas on deep tech operations that I've tried to understand as a customer, advisor and investor. Would love to learn yours 👇. -- 1. Org structure: This is not just about names and faces. Outline your leadership and business execution plan to assure technological breakthroughs and bold company vision. What is the specific role, responsibility and span of control of the CEO and each subordinate officer in the company to carry out this plan? Specifically, how will you manage your business acquisition, product development, production, quality control, and supply chain to assure customer satisfaction? How will you maintain sharing of key business experiences among product lines with core technological commonalities? 2. How do you plan to meet staffing and facility challenges in quantity and quality to meet very rapid growth? 3. What is your specific plan for IP management and control? For the next few years, who will have access to the secret sauce. How will you maintain the balance for strong IP protection with the expanding need to inform employees and special customers with a need to know? From your business enemies and from our enemies of America. 4. What role do digital twins play in each of your product lines? How mature are your tools. What is the planned usage of tools to reduce risk and minimize product development span time. 5. What are the top measurements and KPIs you will use to continuously monitor company health and customer satisfaction? What checks and balances will you build into the system to assure issues are rapidly identified and corrective actions are taken in an effective and timely manner.

Why is strategy so elusive for organizations to solidify and then implement? It all comes down to the investment in management! Hear me out… An engineer would never design a system without taking into account the effects of mechanical friction. Similarly according to Carl von Clausewitz’s, military endeavors cannot succeed without accounting for human, organizational, and situational friction. The problem is found in accounting for the variables of friction when it comes to human endeavors such as war. The attempt to account for all possibilities results in critical delays that jeopardize the entire endeavor. This is why army’s need officers! Now translate this to business. In his book The Art of Action, Stephen Bungay writes: “If Clausewitz is right, no one should develop a strategy without taking into account the affects of organizational friction. Yet we continue to be surprised and frustrated when it manifests itself. We tend to think everything has gone wrong when in fact everything has gone normally. The existence of friction is why armys need officers and businesses need managers. Anticipating and dealing with it form the core of managerial work.” As a leader, what are you doing today to establish strategy for your team, and then train and empower them to handle the inevitable friction that develops as a byproduct of implementing it? I highly recommend the book, The Art of Action, if you want a deep dive into organizational dynamics, and action oriented strategy!
