The Atlanta Braves are a public company. Here are 3 takeaways from their financial statements: 1. Modest Revenue Growth Sports teams have long been hailed as elite investments, often seen as trophy assets for the ultra-wealthy. Their values have soared as they change hands among billionaires. The Atlanta Braves, for example, have enjoyed both on-field success and rising valuations in recent years. Yet, despite their winning ways, the Braves’ top-line revenue growth over the last four quarters is just 6.8%. This isn't an anomaly, either. Year-over-year revenue growth rates in 2022 and 2023 were 4.4% and 8.9%. While this isn’t bad by market standards, many companies are growing much faster. The key question remains: How much longer can sports team valuations continue to outpace their revenue growth? 2. Sports Teams Are Turning Into Major Real Estate Investments When the Atlanta Braves opened Truist Park in 2017, they didn’t just build a stadium—they transformed the entire surrounding area. Along with the ballpark, they developed a thriving entertainment district with hotels, shops, and attractions. This shift is evident in their financials, as the Braves' net plant, property, and equipment peaked at $1.1 billion that same year. Additionally, the company has spent almost $100 million in the last year on capital expenditures. Expect more sports teams to follow suit, leveraging real estate development to boost revenue beyond the field. 3. Unprofitable, But Cash Flow Positive At first glance, the income statement suggests the company isn't profitable, with a cumulative net loss of $60.6 million over the last four quarters. However, the reality is more nuanced—the company is actually cash flow positive, generating $22.5 million in cash from operations over the past year. So, why the big gap between net income and cash flow? As mentioned earlier, the Braves are increasingly a real estate play, and real estate comes with significant depreciation expenses. While $64.3 million in depreciation is recorded on their income statement, it’s a non-cash expense, which is why the company's cash generation tells a different story. Well look at that! SBJ is finally coming around to the opportunity sports DTC streaming can provide teams/leagues. The bottom line, is that as viewing habits continue to shift towards digital platforms and devices, sports entities with built in fan bases and star athletes can exploit DTC streaming: ?? A?DTC?approach allows for direct relationship with fans. Teams can personalize the communication, target marketing and tailor offerings to fans to increase engagement and revenue. ?? A DTC model will be able to better to measure advertisement spending with viewership numbers and post-advertisement behavior. This allows teams to target marketing efforts and to make investment decisions more wisely. ?? DTC sports streaming can utilize data and algorithms to create a more immersive and engaging viewing experience and allows fans to enjoy live and on-demand sports content at their convenience. ?? DTC models are likely to be less lucrative [than current RSN rights fees] at the outset, but allows teams to be in control of their own fortunes and to maximize revenue and fan engagement in meaningful ways that are more sustainable for the long-term health of the franchise.
